"Birmingham"
- Amanda Marshall
Eight of the songs on this year's I.M.O.T.Y. Collection are female vocalists,
a trend that was quite visible in last year's Collection and the industry today.
Amanda Marshall contributes a song that is two-fold. Not only does the listener get a
voice that doesn't stop for anyone, but gets quite an earfull if you listen to the words.
Amanda describes in musical detail the life of an abused woman who decides that it's time
to move on, out of Birmingham. As her drunk husband lies passed out on the couch,
she "...slips the keys out of his pocket" and is on her way. The experience
seems to be one that's frightful, but one that will let her finally be free from an
abusive person. The music? A confident voice that's a hint raspy, mixed with control and
emotion that makes the story being told so much easier to get lost in. Amanda starts the
song out very calm, then builds you to a climax in the story and music all at once. Then
she ends the song in a way that slowly brings you back to reality, but with something to
think about and a melody in your head. An in-your-face song that shows what talent can do
is what Birmingham is all about. Need an uplift? Pop the song in and push
'play'...
