"The Last Night Of The World"
- Miss Saigon Broadway Musical Soundtrack
A good friend of mine got tickets to see the musical Miss Saigon on Broadway
for $20 a piece from an auction his church had held. He invited me to go with him, and I
had no idea what I was in for. I had never seen a Broadway musical before, so I wasn't
prepared for the elaborate sets and attention to detail that I saw on stage. I didn't even
know the plot for the musical, so I went in with no expectations. What I got was so
intense, I went out and bought the soundtrack the next day. Every time I listened to the
CD, I figured out some part of the plot and it's subtle cynicism and mockery of America.
And it wasn't until half way through that I finally realized that there wasn't any spoken
dialogue, kind of like an operetta. I was swept away by the music and fantasyland that was
created on a stage that I was only five rows from. The 'helicopter scene' was amazing. But
the song that made the most impact on me was The Last Night Of The World which
the lead male and female companions sang to each other with feeling that brought emotions
and many memories back. I felt some feelings for romance I hadn't felt in awhile, and
wanted to go out and find someone to cuddle next to and sing this song to. The strings are
captivating, a melody that's entrancing, and a beginning that's fragile with an ending
that's epic. Need a good Broadway musical to go see? I know of one.........
