Subject: keep up good works
Hello Just a quick note to let all of you who participated in the construction of the marx webpages throughout the international web know that you have done a wonderful job. Quite frankly I was somewhat surprised to find such a profound interest in marx marxism marxology and all things related to this important interesting and controversial man. Ironically since the end of all the old "cold war hype" we may re-realize the importance of marx and the broad and rich history of the international left that came from his legacy. I have a hunch that like Mr. Twain the premature report of the "death of Marxism and the Left" and all things related to him may be somewhat presumptuous. Indeed the way things stand on this planet today the history that we all make daily seems to linger with with us for a bit longer. Again thank you for your efforts in publishing this important information for the world. Keep up the good works. Good people are out there and they still do need your ideas and information. You may email me for any further insights updates or information concerning your project. kallas@ucsd.edu Sincerely Mario Kallas College Teacher and Political Science Ph.D. grad student.

From: Jim Davis ( jdav@mcs.com )
+----------------------------------------------------------------+ Book Announcement CUTTING EDGE Technology Information Capitalism and Social Revolution Edited by Jim Davis Thomas A. Hirschl and Michael Stack Published by Verso Fall 1997 Available at bookstores now +----------------------------------------------------------------+ A robot can build a car. But a robot cannot buy a car... The explosion in the development of computer- and robotic-based manufacturing is seeing the rapid expansion of laborless production systems. Such systems create enormous instability both for the overall economy where money previously paid in wages is now invested in labor-saving technology and therefore cannot be spent on goods and for workers whose jobs are being deskilled or are simply disappearing. Bringing together contributions from workers employed in the new electronics and information industries with work from theorists in economics politics and science Cutting Edge provides an up-to- the-minute analysis of the complex relations between technology and work. Paperback 1 85984 185 6 =A315.00 / $19.00 Hardback 1 85984 830 3 =A340.00 / $60.00 +----------------------------------------------------------------+ >From the introduction to _Cutting Edge_: How is one to make sense of the world today? Contemporary political and economic events as well as recent technological developments defy conventional analysis. The general breakdown of the post-World War II social order is well underway, visibly evident in the dramatic dissolution of the Eastern European and Soviet socialist economies. The dramatic polarization of wealth and poverty -- not just between the technologized and under- technologized nations, or north and south, but also within the technologized center -- exposes the capitalism has won" and history is over pronouncements as rather premature. The socioeconomic polarization matures as the powers of science and technology leap ahead at breakneck speed. While the traditional Left has lost much of its appeal, and the world's labor unions are on the defensive, new forces have stepped onto the world stage. Scenes from this drama are as diverse as the Los Angeles rebellion in 1992, the Chiapas uprising beginning in 1994, the regular eruptions in the industrial heart of the U.S. ,the tent cities and marches of the welfare recipients and the homeless in Philadelphia, Detroit, Boston, Oakland and other U.S. cities, the labor strikes in France, Korea, Canada, Germany ,Russia, and the new student movement emerging in the U.S. and elsewhere. The world has entered a period of upheaval. This collection of essays attempts to make sense of trends and developments as the 20th century draws to a close. The pieces share an attempt to confront the contradictions of society today and put them on a firm material footing. Despite the many gloomy signals as this is written they betray a spirit of optimism about the future." Subject: (MARX) Links and opinions needed concerning decisive tasks
======================================== Links and opinions needed concerning the decisive tasks for rebuilding a genuine communist movement ======================================== To the readers of the MarxJour List I need your help. I am working to build discussion on the most important question facing the working class today: What are the most decisive tasks for rebuilding a genuine communist movement ? I have recently formulated what I believe are the decisive tasks for communists in the countries of bourgeois democracy--at least in respect to the next decade or so and the coming revolution in digital communications. Since my article is the work of a single person there are bound to be deficiencies. My article is posted on the web and has a section at the bottom of the page which will link to all sincere and serious comments criticisms or suggestions which discuss in a concrete way *the decisive tasks for rebuilding a genuine communist movement*. Following is a summary of what I have concluded are the decisive tasks: 1) A web-based news service =========================== In the realm of practice the decisive task is the development of a web-based news service that would be open to all trends and created in such a way that no single trend or group of trends could exercise effective control over it in such a way as to exclude other trends. This would be accomplished by *not* using copyright protection and instead creating the news service on the basis of simple technical and political agreements that would be enforced by the weight of mass opinion. Such a news service would allow its readers to decide for themselves what topics authors and trends are of interest--and what would be filtered out by a wide variety of filtering methods. Such a news service would assist in bringing the masses (as over the next decade or so they come on-line) into contact with news and analysis by groups on the left--and would also provide a vehicle for both cooperation and competition between various trends. 2) A clear picture of workers' rule =================================== In the realm of theory the decisive task is the development of a clear picture of how the system of workers' rule can suppress the bourgeoisie *without also* suppressing the working class (and thus paving the way for the domination of a new class of privileged exploiters--as happened in the Soviet Union China and other "socialist" countries). The communications revolution will itself play a big role in this since under the system of workers' rule--the access of all to the internet will help to ensure that mass democracy prevails against the interests of all privileged sections. Discussion and development of this decisive question is necessary to restore the confidence of workers in the possibility of workers' rule after previous attempts degenerated into police states run by and for the interests of a corrupt ruling elite. What's New at Socialist Appeal's "In Defence of Marxism" November 1997 In Defence of the Russian Revolution http://easyweb.easynet.co.uk/~socappeal/copenhagen.html This month marks the eightieth anniversary of the Russian revolution. To conmemorate that magnificent event we republish an edited version of a speech Leon Trotsky gave in Copenhagen in 1932. It outlines and defends both the methods and the ideals of the Bolshevik Party and the role of revolutionary Marxism in the events of 1917. We also publish another two chapters of Ted Grant's book Russia from Revolution to counter-revolution: http://easyweb.easynet.co.uk/~socappeal/russia Part Five: from war to 'de-Stalinisation' This chapter covers a wide range of subjects including the amazing recovery of the USSR after the war the changes in Eastern Europe and the Chinese revolution the 'de-Stalinisation' process of Kruschev after Stalin's death and its meaning the Hungarian uprising of 1956 and the less known Novochernassk uprising in Russia in 1962. Part Six: the period of stagnation This chapter covers the beginning of the stagnation of Russian economy with detailed facts and figures the repression under Breznev and its effects in the development of art and science.
