Aug 7 - Washington DC Demonstration

About four hundred Chinese students and scholars, representing a collective colleges and universities in the East Coast, human rights organizations, Amnesty International, Washington D.C. Chinese community organizations picketed the Indonesian Embassy in Washington D.C. The protesters carried placards saying "Respect Human Rights" " Habibie Has No Shame" and walked around the Embassy with pickets.

Aug 7 - Los Angeles Demonstration

In one of the largest rallies of Chinese Americans since June 4 Tienanmen in Los Angeles, an estimated 3,000 demonstrators marched and rallied before the Indonesian Consulate in Los Angeles. The protesters emotionally chanted "Shame on You" " Shame on You" 'Shame on You" obviously directing their indignation on the intemperate remarks of President Habibie about somebody else filling the vacuum left by the fleeing Chinese Indonesians. The Consulate, after much prodding, finally allowed two representatives from the demonstration to enter the Consulate to present their written letter to President Habibie.

Aug 7 - Chicago Demonstration

About 300 demonstrators marched in front of the Indonesian consulate demanding justice for the Indonesian victims of racial violence and brutalization. The protesters wore yellow ribbons and demanded that justice be brought to bear against the racist perpetrators and masterminds behind the riots.

Aug 7 – Houston Demonstration

About 300 people demonstrated in front of the Indonesia Consulate. The event drew a dozen of reporters from TV and newspapers and half a dozen police. It lasted two and half hours in a moderate rain showers, during which three speeches were made, and two protesting letters were read. The protesting letters, signed by more than 500 people, were presented by Siliang Yang and Hua Xu to a representative of the Consulate who promised to send it to the Indonesian government.

Aug 7 - San Francisco Free Speech Rally

About 300 protesters massed in from of the Indonesian Consulate in San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf Area. Amongst them were members of the Bay Area's Chinese Indonesian community, community leaders, and representative from Congresswoman's Nancy Pelosi's office. The protesters presented an Open Letter to President Habibie, with a list of demands, including a full, transparent inquiry to account and bring justice to bear upon the masterminds and perpetrators of the heinous crimes against humanity during the May Riots. They also demanded that Habibie and his government end ethnic discrimination in Indonesia and accord full citizenship rights to all Indonesians of Chinese descent, and implement a harmonious, pluralistic, and diverse society where ethnic discrimination and religious discrimination are banned.

Aug 7 - New York Demonstration

Over 3,000 protesters, with over 150 community organizations, wearing yellow ribbons or yellow headbands marched en masse before the Indonesian consulate in New York City, expressing their outrage and denounced the racial violence in Indonesia.

Aug 7 - Toronto Demonstration

Over 500 Chinese Canadians marched from the Eaton Shopping Mall in downtown Toronto, carrying banners and placards protesting the Indonesian atrocities and expressed their solidarity with the Chinese Indonesians living in peril in Indonesia. The protesters wound their way through downtown Toronto and marched for two hours ending up in the Indonesian Consulate in Toronto. The protesters presented a protest manifesto to the Indonesian consulate officials.

Aug 7 - Vancouver Demonstration

The demonstration was scaled down because the police permit was not approved in time. About 30 people marched from Chinatown to the Indonesian Consulate. A protest letter was presented to an Indonesia Consulate official.

Aug 8 - Washington DC Demonstration

Nearly 1,000 people from the Chinese community in metropolitan Washington areas rallied Saturday at the Indonesian Embassy to protest against the anti-Chinese violence in Indonesia in May. "Punish rapists!" "Punish murderers!" the protesters shouted in front of the embassy. "We want justice, we want it now!" "For the overseas Chinese all over the world, it is extremely painful to learn about the crimes committed against Chinese Indonesian women and children," said a protest letter signed by hundreds of people.

Aug 8 - Boston Demonstration

The rally was planned for 500 people but it turned out to have 1300 people gathering at the Gateway Park in Chinatown to protest the violence against ethnic Chinese in Indonesia. More activities are planed in the coming weeks including a big banner with up to 10000 signatures in Chinatown.

Aug 8 - Ottawa Demonstration

About 700 people demonstrated in front of the Indonesia Embassy. Two representatives, one from pro-China group and the other from pro-Taiwan group, were invited into the Embassy. Two protest letters (one from each group) were presented to an Indonesian official.

Aug 8 - Auckland, New Zealand Rally - Yellow Ribbon campaign

3000 people demonstrated at the Aoetea Square. Over 3000 signatures were collected for the petition in a couple of hours. The petition (will be over 4000 by next week) will be presented to the Indonesian Embassy and the Member of Parliament (ethnic Chinese) in Wellington on Aug 18.

Aug 8/9 – Calgary Public Forum & Photo Exhibition
