SIERRA CLUB TAKING AIM AT CHEVIOT MINE
The Sierra Club opened an Edmonton office yesterday and announced it will ask its U.S. parent to step into the fray. While the Canadian branch has just 2,000 members, the U.S. Sierra Club has more than 500,000 and better than 80 chapters. It's the kind of strength their northern peers need to take on Cheviot, said spokesman Sonja Mihelcic. "There's information they can access that we just can't get in Canada and they have a lot of clout," she said. "They can advertise our situation to other environmental groups in the U.S. and they have greater resources." But Sierra Club opponents suggested yesterday bringing in the U.S. cavalry won't endear the lobby to Albertans. "We're aware of their tactics in the past and they have certainly worked with some fringe groups," said Andy Von Busse, with the Alberta Fish and Game Association. "And when you have a U.S. organization coming up here there's always a credibility gap there."
