UNTAES
(JANUARY - MARCH 1996)
After collapse of Sector West in May 95, and operation "Storm" that put an end to Sectors North and South (Aug.95) - Sector East was the last part of Croatian territories controlled by ARSK (Army of Republic of Serbska Kraina).
UNPF Command prepared proposals to UN HQ NY on the establishment of the independent Mission UN Transitional Administration for Eastern Slavonia (UNTAES). The first draft did not include UNMO element to the Mission structure. It was a really hard job to be done by UNMO HQ to prove the necessity of military observers presence in the new Mission. Eventually couple of dozens of UNMOs in the Sector East were reinforced under the SCR 1037 up to the level of 100 officers. Part of UNMOs released from duties in BiH and other Sectors in Croatia were posted to new Mission.
That was interesting organizational work - deployment and tasking of new teams, establishing new contacts. I believe our work at the beginning of the Mission and experience UNMOs brought from other Sectors provided a basis for the success of the UNTAES in general.
