Native American Prisoner
The following is a list of Native Prisoners incarcerated in prisons throughout the United States and Canada. This list is a compilation of the efforts of many different people. Janet Smith, whose husband Gary Night Owl sends out the weekly online newsletter Wotanging Ikche -- Native American News, compiled the A-Z and Oklahoma Death Row lists with the help of hundreds of Wotanging Ikche readers. Many, many, many thanks to Janet Smith for allowing her list to be published here. The other lists came about as a result of Laura Brooks' research on Native American Spiritual Freedom in Prison. If you know of a Native prisoner who would like to be included here, please e-mail Janet Smith.

Guidelines for Writing to Prisoners
Unfortunately, prisoners are constantly being moved around to different prisons. It's just one of the tactics prison officials use as part of their 'behavior modification' policies: by removing prisoners to remote and isolated areas far away from the support of their family and friends, it's supposed to break their spirit and turn them into more docile prisoners. What it actually does, however, is destroy prisoners' critical support systems - their best chance at rehabilitation. That's why prisoners need your letters so desperately - to re-establish their support systems. So if you send a letter to a prisoner and it's returned because the prisoner has been moved, please don't give up. Simply e-mail this address update to Janet Smith and then try to contact another prisoner. It only costs you a couple of stamps - but it may make a world of difference to the prisoner who receives your letter.

Before sending anything to a prisoner (e.g. stamps, gifts, newsworthy materials), first check with the prisoner to see what is allowed at that prison. Otherwise, you'll be wasting your money. Prison officials will send the item back stamped 'contraband.' In some cases, the prisoner himself or herself might even get in trouble. Bottom line - don't send anything except letters until you've first checked with the prisoner.

PennPals has a helpful frequently-asked-questions (faq) page about writing to prisoners.
