 1645Battle of Naseby. Royalist cavalry pursued themselves off the field and out of the battle which was ultimately won by Cromwell.
 1777Stars and Stripes adopted as US flag, replacing Grand Union flag.
 1821Battle of Carabobo, Venezuela, Bolivar defeated Spanish establishing independence for Columbia.
 1870The Franco-Prussian War begins with French mobilization. The Germans followed suit on the 15th.
 1942Afrika Korps captures Tobruk.
 1952Keel laid for 1st nuclear powered submarine, the Nautilus.
