 1306Battle of Methuen. A small Scottish force under Robert the Bruce was defeated by a much larger English force. Bruce returned in the following year to continue the war.
 1778Washington's troops finally leave Valley Forge.
 1940Rommel's 7th Panzer Division captures Cherbourg.
 1944The Great Marianas Turkey Shoot. Lacking skilled pilots, Japanese air attacks easily rebuffed by naval forces under the command of Adm. Spruance.
