Reno backs Denver gun crackdown

Attorney general pushes firearms
enforcement, wants new legislation to cut
down on hate crimes

U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno wants new federal laws to protect people from hate crimes and to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and children.

[ What's a 'hate crime'? Is it hate speech? Is it a 'thought crime'? How are we going to stop "bad thoughts"? Perhaps drugs - like Prozac, Zoloft, Luvox, or Paxil? We'll address that later, Janet. You know, given the recent advances in technology - especially the internet - we probably COULD implement those darling "telescreens" that they had in George Orwell's book "1984" . Stop drooling, Janet, Bill, Hillary, Chucky, ... ]

"The nation waits for Congress to act," Reno said Monday.

She said she has high hopes such legislation will pass.

Reno was in Denver to address a meeting on hate crimes and to endorse a local crackdown on violations of existing gun laws.

U.S. Attorney Tom Strickland officially announced the crackdown, known as Project Exile Colorado, at a news conference in the federal office building in downtown Denver. Federal, state and local authorities will work together to prosecute more gun crimes, in whatever jurisdiction offers the toughest penalty for the specific crime.

The project will include an ad campaign to encourage people to notify authorities if someone they know has an illegal gun.

[ Hello, Big Brother !! This was encouraged in "1984", and Nazi Germany, too. What's an "illegal gun"? What if a good, otherwise law-abiding citizen owns a "banned" firearm for self-defense? Today, in some places in the USA, they are certain autoloading rifles and handguns, tomorrow they will be 'sniper rifles', next week they might be all handguns, and whenever YOU FEEL LIKE SAYING SO, they will ALL be illegal. ]

"Project Exile Colorado recognizes that any effective approach must prevent gun violence before it happens, by keeping guns out of the hands of criminals and children," Reno said.

[ Project Exile - that's been an NRA-sponsored idea for YEARS, hasn't it ?? ]

She said Department of Justice officials are also reviewing lawsuits some cities have filed recently against gun manufacturers.

The lawsuits seek to recover the cities' costs of dealing with gun violence, similar to other government lawsuits against tobacco companies for costs of treating tobacco-related illnesses.

"We're reviewing those lawsuits to determine their nature and whether we think it can be replicated in other jurisdictions," Reno said.

[ I would think that if tobacco companies and firearm manufacturers will be held liable for costs incurred by society due to the use or misuse of their LEGAL products, then ALL manufacturers of ALL legal products MUST also be held liable as well - otherwise the law is not fair and discriminatory. Let's start with KNIFE and AUTOMOBILE manufacturers. Then we'll proceed to golf club, baseball bat, and metal pipe manufacturers. Of course, the gasoline and kitchen match companies will be held liable for arsons. Sears Craftsman and the Stanley Tool Company will be held liable for the misuse of HAMMERS (Remember that Mark Barton murdered his wife and two children by bludgeoning them with a hammer, and then finished them off by drowning them - who made that BATHTUB? - before he methodically and dispassionately gunned down 21 people in two brokerage firms in Atlanta, killing nine.) and screwdrivers. 'Fast Food' companies - WATCH OUT! Heart disease is a major killer of Americans and is associated with tremendous medical costs - and we know those greaseburgers and fries are major contributors ...

Additionally, by the same token, they all must be PAID for all the BENEFITS that they give our society. Depending on whose data you use, firearms are used anywhere from 1 to 2.5 million times per year to save innocent lives. In the vast majority of cases, nobody is injured, yet the crime is stopped. What's that worth to us? ]

During her visit, the attorney general paid tribute to Columbine High School students, saying she remembered visiting south Jefferson County shortly after the April 20 shootings.

Students Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold killed 12 students and a teacher, and wounded more than 20 others before killing themselves.

[ Why haven't you told us that virtually all of the gun-related massacres that have made headlines over the past decade have had one thing in common: they were perpetrated by people taking Prozac, Zoloft, Luvox, Paxil or a related antidepressant drug?? These drugs can cause akathisia, mental and physical agitation that sparks self-destructive behavior. They can also induce dissociative reactions, making those who take it insensitive to the consequences of their behavior. Tell us, Janet. ]

"I still remember the strength and the courage and the spirit of the young people -- indeed of all the people that I met that day," Reno said.

[ You have a good memory. So ... tell us all what really happened in Waco, Texas ... ]

Earlier Monday, Reno said the job of reducing hate crimes must begin when children are so small they are just beginning to acquire consciences and learning not to harm each other.

She said people who commit hate crimes typically feel alone, confused, unloved and helpless.

"Hatred starts with somebody who doesn't feel he or she has control over their lives," Reno said.

[ Is that right, Dr. Reno? How did you come to these conclusions? ]

Children who are teased at school, then go home to a place where there's no one to help them deal with hurt and rejection, are especially at risk, she said.

[ Is this your opinion, or do you have facts to back up this statement? I mean, it SOUNDS right, but is it? The world 'used to be' flat, until somebody proved that is just NOT the truth. Understand that I'm not arguing with Ms. Reno on these points, I just want the FACTS to back up the things she says. ]

She called for earlier identification and help for children with mental health problems.

[ Right - so we can put them on Prozac, Zoloft, Luvox, Paxil, or a related antidepressant drug. This way, we can have MORE murderous rampages, and blame the firearms. ]

"We must give kids the self-confidence and self-esteem to solve problems without violence," Reno said.

[ NO, children must LEARN and EARN self-confidence and self-esteem ... ]

She said teachers can teach tolerance and non-violence just as they teach other skills. She also called on police officers to speak positively about diversity with kids in neighborhoods -- and with other police officers.

She said everyone must speak out against bigots.

[ But wouldn't that be a "hate crime" against bigots? Also, they probably can't help it if they're bigots - they were probably born or raised that way. ]

"Haters are cowards, and most of the time when they are confronted they back down," Reno said. "Unchallenged, they just get bolder and bolder and meaner and meaner."

[ Now we'll have laws against "being mean" or "hating" ? ]

She said federal laws should protect people against hate crimes based on gender, disability or sexual orientation.

[ You left out race - a biggie - and what about RELIGION? That's a big one, too. You know, like burning people to death because they were "religious kooks" ? I think that anyone who was responsible for that fiasco should be brought up on murder and 'hate crime' charges, don't YOU agree? ]
