Workers' Memorial Day

April 28, 2005

In the past two decades over 2,000 workers have died in the U.S. as the result of willful safety violations by employers. April 28 is the international observance in memory of those who have died from work-related injuries and illnesses.

This piece is accompanied by a cartoon by Gary Huck of Huck/Konopacki Labor Cartoons. The cartoon shows Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao, left hand on hip and right hand pointing for emphasis, asking "Do you have any idea what health and safety regulations cost corporations?". To her right, a worker with his right arm and left foot in casts, says "Let me guess. An arm and a leg!". The cartoon, from the October 2004 packet, should be on the web until the October 2005 packet is published.
