Whereas, the historical process of colonization persists -- exploitation of indigenous peoples will continue in an unprecedented and wider scale in the name of globalization through GATT-WTO-APEC.
Whereas, our ancestral land rights continue to be violated under capitalist exploitation through the construction of energy projects (e.g. dams), indiscriminate awarding of mining rights to foreign corporations through the Mining Law of 1995, conversion of agricultural and forest lands to cash crop economy, subdivisions, tourist resorts and further commercialization and destruction of culture, and the consequent militarization of indigenous peoples' territories.
Whereas, the state agencies and social institutions such as the church, schools and the media are used as instruments to further marginalize indigenous peoples and annihilate cultures to advance imperialist exploitation and domination.
Whereas, the above situation of the indigenous peoples is an indication that the process of globalization will result in the death of indigenous peoples as distinct peoples and that together with their demise is the loss of indigenous knowledge.
Thus, it is hereby resolved that:
The anti-imperialist movement recognize the urgency of the struggle being waged by the indigenous peoples to maintain the specificity of their cultures and the right to self determination as a political and collective right, and to chart the direction of their social and economic development;
Information exchange be carried out to raise global consciousness on the issues and problems concerning the indigenous peoples; and
Greater solidarity be strengthened with other oppressed sectors and peoples.
