Pond wins second term as Governor

Richard Pond was elected as Bavan Governor this week. The results were formally announced by President Ken Kerns, himself a Bava resident and former Governor of the Province, earlier today, 1st July 1998.

Governor Pond was re-elected with more than 55% of the vote, more than 20 percentage points ahead of his nearest rival (write-in candidate Derrick Seavers) in terms of share of the vote. Pond told this newspaper that he was delighted with the result and that it would be a great honour to serve the people of Bava as Governor for a second term.

Pond added that he intended to press ahead with the ratification of Bava's Constitution shortly. Although Bava was the first Province to draft a constitution, it has yet to formally ratify it.

Governor calls on everyone to help build the new Bava

In his acceptance speech before cheering crowds in Bava City, Governor Pond told Bavan citizens that all of them - except fascists - would have a part to play in building the new Bava. He wanted Bava to grow and asked citizens to encourage friends to immigrate to Cyberia and to choose Bava as their home.

But he added that he was concerned about the growing fascist menace. From the figures, it seems that at least two Bavans voted for David McNamara, who is openly Fascist, for the post of Deputy for Bava. Although Socialist Heather Moore easily beat McNamara, it is still worrying than more than 10% of Bavans were willing to back the far-right. Pond said that moderate conservatives, liberals, and socialists alike must unite to oppose the fascist menace at every turn.

Moore wins Deputy post as Socialists sweep Cyberia

The Socialist Party swept Cyberia over the weekend, picking up more than a third of the national vote in the Assembly elections. The Socialists will have the highest number of representatives of any party in the new Chamber, although they will not have an overall majority, so the final mathematics of the National Assembly are yet to be seen.

Bava was no except to the national pattern, as Heather Moore was elected in a landslide vote as Deputy for Bava. Socialists also maintained power in Mala and Windsor.

Rosario wins election but Menet has no Governor

Michael Rosario was elected as Deputy for Menet, but even as the result was announced, questions started to be asked. Rosario, the leader of the Communist Workers Party, has been quick to make enemies in Cyberia, and is currently engaged in a legal battle. It has now been confirmed by Chief Justice Vadim Pokolitov that Menet's governorship will fall vacant once Rosario becomes a Deputy.

Rosario's political future remains uncertain. Governor Pond is one of the three Supreme Court jurors in the Rosario trial. Asked by the New Bava to comment on the trial, Pond refused.

Sports News. The City of Equality beat Keynes Bay 3-1 in a game of Bavan cyberball yesterday. Next week the City, on a high after its surprise success, will go on to face last year's champions, Bava City, in what promises to be a nailbiting match.
