Index of guitar pages by Donald Sauter.

Years ago I put up a web page listing the guitar and piano music that I found at the Library of Congress. It was created for noncommercial, informational purposes after my original, shortlived attempt to market the pieces. I would occasionally get inquiries about how one might acquire this music, so I worked up this page to make it simple for anyone to order it from me.

Only a few of these works have been published in modern editions - and good luck finding them. The pieces offered here are presented in "performance facsimile", meaning that modifications and corrections have been made directly on a copy of the original. The result yields excellent authority and playability.

MODIFICATIONS TO THE ORIGINALS:

• Measure numbers have been supplied.
• Errors have been corrected.
• All page-turn problems for the guitarist have been solved.
• For the modern reader's comfort:
  • Implied accidentals have been written in.
  • Whole and half notes engraved at their rhythmic center have been shifted to where the note begins.
• Background has been despeckled.
• Flawed musical symbols have been reconstructed.
• Noteheads engraved dangerously high or low have been repositioned.

All corrections and modifications to the original have been noted on an information sheet which is supplied with each piece. They are also available on the web in my original guitar and piano page, Appendix 2.

After "completing" my project, I found another stash of guitar & piano pieces at the Library of Congress and made copies of just those pieces that I didn't already have in any edition. These are distinguished below by the words, "Not restored." However, they are all in excellent shape and perfectly readable. The one thing I did for them was number the measures.

RESTORATION: This "before and after" gives an idea of some of the work that went into making these facsimile editions easy to read. (Restore the image to its natural size if your browser shrinks it.) On the average, about 3 hours of hard labor went into each page of music. The example is taken from W0119, a Potpourri by Wolf.

FORMAT: The music is printed on convenient, U.S. "letter size" 8.5 x 11 inch pages. This is very close to A4 size. While this page size is generally smaller than that of the original publication, the size of the music itself is within a few percent of the original - often a bit larger.

I suggest you organize the loose pages into performance-friendly booklets with a plastic comb binding machine.

PRICING: $.26 per page. For customers in the U.S., this includes postage and handling.

I hope that sounds like a good deal. All possible care has gone into producing razor-sharp copies fitted perfectly to the page. Consider that copies at the Library of Congress cost $.20 (writing in 2005). Also consider the tedious work and the time involved in making one's own copies. You'd be lucky to copy a few pieces per day, and that much time slicing, organizing, recopying (you'd be nuts to play from your first-generation masters) and generally processing what you acquired that day. Never mind the restoration work, finding and correcting the mistakes, and numbering the measures.

ORDERING INSTRUCTIONS: There are three steps.

1. Send me an email at donaldsauter@gmail.com with this information:

• CATALOG NUMBER (W0013, W0087, etc.) and NUMBER OF PAGES of each piece you are ordering.
• Add up the NUMBER OF PAGES.
• Multiply the TOTAL NUMBER OF PAGES by $.26 for the TOTAL COST OF THE ORDER.
• Your MAILING ADDRESS (optional, if your address on file with PayPal is up-to-date.)

Please refrain from asking for recommendations, or for digital scans. No, no, no, no, NO! I was born with a certain curse which makes my recommendation - of anything - the kiss of death; and digital scans would easily be five hundred times as much work for me, tons more work for you, and yield far inferior final quality.

2. Wait for a CONFIRMATION EMAIL indicating everything is in order. This is mainly for your benefit; without confirmation you might not be sure this offer is still in effect.

3. Deposit the TOTAL COST OF THE ORDER in my PAYPAL account, using my email address, donaldsauter@gmail.com . In PayPal, click the button for "This is a purchase of Goods." Also enter a short message in the "Email to recipient" box, so that I will receive a notification message from PayPal.

That's it; sit back and wait a few day.

MINIMUM ORDER: $20. You should come up with at least 77 pages or so in order to not shortchange yourself.

PAGE COUNTS: I arrived at the page count for each piece by adding 2 to the total number of music pages. (In other words, subtract 2 from the page counts you see below to determine the number of pages of music.) You may view this either as paying full price for the two cover pages; or as a modest base charge for each piece which covers the several non-music pages, the overhead processing labor (which is the same for a 1-page or a 100-page piece), and maybe contributing a few leftover pennies to the postage.

CATALOG FORMAT: I use a format devised for my own purposes - and now you're stuck with it. Really, it's not so bad. I am most interested in the guitarist responsible for a piece, even in the case of arrangements of works by other composers. So my basic format is:

Guitarist/Composer/Title

If the guitarist himself was the composer, the composer slot is redundant, and left empty:

If there are individual pieces contained within a larger work or publication, they are notated using the same format on indented lines below the main title.

ROYAL COPENHAGEN LIBRARY (REX): I have indicated where a given piece is also part of the Rischel & Birket-Smith collection of the Royal Copenhagen Library (REX), which you can access free of charge. If I never get an order and everyone uses this page to find free guitar & piano music from REX, I will still feel like I've done a good service. You will see at the bottom of the page I have provided links to all the other guitar & piano works in REX (which I could find) which are not in the Library of Congress holdings. This is not a sales pitch, but I do wonder if the "free" route, taking everything into consideration, can possibly result in any savings.

By the way, if you do print out the REX scans, I still invite you to visit my original guitar & piano page to check the list of errors in each piece. Also, you'll find the leading measure number for each line of each part, which will save you much hair-pulling and gnashing of teeth.
