A Scrabble lagoon is an area of the Scrabble board devoid of tiles completely surrounded by words that connect snuggly in a loop. Witness the world's largest ever Scrabble lagoon below.
If the board is viewed as a pirate's map where each Scrabble square represents 1 acre, the lagoon covers a whopping 72 acres!
Also of interest is how few turns we played in the game. There were 21 total turns, and that in spite of the greater number of tiles in the Scrabble II bag. In this game there were 105 tiles played.
By way of comparison, consider that in the 2008 National Scrabble Championship, held in Orlando, Florida, the average for the 28 "Table 1" games was 25.1 turns per game. Those are the best players on earth; they play with exactly 100 tiles; and they always know in advance exactly what letters will come up in the game.
The board is presented twice. The second grid has all the tiles flipped across the diagonal. This makes words that were vertical on the original board horizontal on the flipped board. The net result is that you can read all the words played just by scanning left to right as you normally read, and simply ignoring anything going on vertically.
