The First Model UN Conference (SMMUN II)

Saturday, March 31, 2001

9:30 am – 4:30 pm

The first Sarasota-Manatee Model UN (SMMUN) was held at the Selby Library Auditorium on March 31, 2001. SMMUN simulated a UN Security Council session on “A more effective UN peacekeeping program”. About 20 high school students attended this meeting. College students and others from the Florida High School Model UN (FHSMUN) and several members of our Chapter were also present as advisors and resource persons, along with several teachers or educators.

The model UN drafted, debated and passed resolutions to improve the UN peacekeeping system and to act on a simulated crisis in Kosovo, Macedonia, and Serbia that was based on actual developments. The students were serious, articulate, generally well informed, and had obviously studied and absorbed the policies followed by the 15 countries that are the current members of the Security Council for which they were delegates. The debates, breaks for committees to draft resolutions, unexpected news despatches that arrived during the debates, testimony by advisors who played the role of experts called for testimony, though obviously compressed into the time available, closely followed both procedures and flavor of actual Security Council procedures. The success of the meeting was beyond our expectation.
