I. Information
After the success of its two first model UN conferences, respectively held on 31 March and 17 November 2001, the UNA Sarasota-Manatee Chapter is organizing a third one-day Model UN Conference on Saturday 16 November 2002, at the New College Sudakoff Conference Center in Sarasota, for high school students, simulating two UN Security Council sessions on the role of the UN, respectively in Israel-Palestine conflicts and in fighting global terrorism.
Students in Sarasota-Manatee counties and other neighboring areas are invited to attend the Conference. There will be no registration fee and a complimentary light lunch will be offered to participants. Four awards of $200 each will be offered to students judged to be the best delegates, to cover the cost of their participation in the Florida High School Model UN (FHSMUN), to be held next year.

The Security Council is composed of 15 Member States of which five are permanent members having a veto power, and 10 are elected by the UN General Assembly for two-year terms. In practice, the non-permanent seats are assigned regionally, with regional groups of nations selecting their nominees, which are then formally elected by the General Assembly. Each year, five new members are elected to the Council. In 2002, the composition of the Security Council is as follows:

China, France. Russian Federation, United Kingdom and United States
Other member states: Bulgaria, Cameroon, Colombia, Guinea, Ireland, Mauritius, Mexico, Norway, Singapore and Syrian Arab Republic.

II. Participants
As scheduled, the third one-day Model UN Conference of the UNA Sarasota-Manatee Chapter was held on Saturday, 16 November 2002, at the New College Sudakoff Conference Center in Sarasota. Students participated in two UN Security Council simulations—one on the Israel-Palestine conflicts and the other on fighting global terrorism.
Seven high schools (five from the Sarasota-Manatee area and one each from Port Charlotte and Tarpon Springs) brought a total of 120 students to participate in the Conference. They were joined by 40 school advisers and guests/observers.
