Education

Several events this autumn continued the work of the Education Committee, chaired by Margaret Bates. Six teachers who took part in our training workshops last year were welcomed as new members of the association. In November a workshop on the UN, planned particularly for new UNA member but including many other Chapter members as well, started with some basic history of the UN and then dealt with recent events. Presentations were made by Margaret Bates, Scott Behoteguy and Wade Matthews, and participants in the discussion included several Chapter members who had played roles in the UN activities considered.

At the end of the year, on December 10, the Chapter will sponsor a public commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, working jointly with the Gulf Coast Chapter of UNIFEM and the Sarasota branch of AAUW. The program includes a talk on the background and development of the declaration, a panel of citizens discussing activities of Amnesty International, the problems of journalists concerning freedom of expression, and the recent creation of an International Criminal Court. Students from Sarasota and Booker high schools will show us Eleanor Roosevelt in the UN General Assembly and Susan B. Anthony on trial for trying to vote. Several videos were also shown.

Several UNA members also acted as consultants for students at New College interested in international relations.
