UNA-USA Sarasota-Manatee Chapter

WHAT DO WE DO IN SARASOTA AND MANATEE COUNTIES?

The Sarasota-Manatee Chapter of UNA-USA draws its members primarily from those two counties. Its educational program includes monthly luncheons from September through May with speakers, often nationally and internationally known, on themes relevant to the United Nations or foreign affairs. Seminars and other non-luncheon programs with speakers or discussion leaders are also scheduled. Recent programs have included a town hall on sustainable development and habitat, and the planting of trees in a local park. A speakers' bureau offers informed members as speakers on topics related to the UN and international affairs without charge to local clubs, university and high school classes, and other organizations.

The Chapter sponsors teacher training seminars, encourages and offers some support to model UN participation by local high school and college students, and participates in global policy studies. The Chapter prepares and mails a monthly newsletter,The Reporter, to all members and many other community leaders. The Reporter announces the Chapter's forthcoming speakers' luncheons and other activities, informs about the UN's work, problems, and proposed solutions, and on individual actions needed to encourage US funding and support.

The Chapter's advocacy program encourages letters and articles promoting support of the UN and its work to local newspapers and letters, telephone calls, and personal visits to our elected representatives to Washington. Local governments are encouraged to proclaim and observe UN day each October. The Chapter sponsors appropriate community exhibits and other observances of that day.
