The key speaker was Mr. Desaix Anderson, Former Deputy Assistant Secretary of state for East Asia and the Pacific and currently Executive Director of the Korean Peninsula Energy Development Organization in New York. *1999 UNA-USA National Convention
The1999 UNA-USA National Conventionwas held on March 6-9, in New York City. The theme was: The United Nations in the New Millennium: We're All in It Together. Building a Society for All Ages.Meetings was held at the Hotel Roosevelt and at the United Nations Headquarters.

The monthly Board of Directors Meeting was held on Saturday, March 13 , at 9:30am at the new Selby Library.
* Music Concert by Firenze Trio
A second concert was by Firenze Trio in Sarasota on Tuesday, March 30.
. It was a rare opportunity for music lovers to heat a superlative group of artists . They have achieved a unique status among the best in Europe. Made up of a cellist, violinist and pianist, this trio is well known and praised by the music critics in Italy, Austrlia, France and Switzerlanld. Around 200 persons attended the Concert.

Dr. Julia Henderson presented her newly published book, Around the World in 80 Years, at the Music Center, New College, on14 April 99. Light refreshments have been offred, free of charge to participants.

The UNA Sarasota-Manatee Chapterl hosted the 1999 UNA Florida Convention, from April 30 to May 1, 1999, at Holliday Inn Riverview, Bradenton.
More than 100 UNA-USA members in Florida were able to attend this important convention which gave them an opportunity to meet, talk with and hear from Ambassador William Luers, our new national Chairman, President and CEO and Ambassador Chen Guofang , Deputy Permanent Representative of the People Republic of China, on "China-US Relations and Cooperations in the UN". There were also other interesting speakers, including James Olson, Vice-President for Programs, UNA-USA Tom Cook, Dr.Margaret Bates and Dr. Daniel Luu from Sarasota-Manatee Chapter, energizing workshops, UNA Web sites demonstrations, plenary session with input from chapters and chapter members, and ample opportunity to renew old friendships. The participants were also allowed some free time on Saturday afternoon for visiting Sarasota's famous Ringling Art Museum (admission is free on Saturdays) and other attractions.(For more details please see 1999 UNA Florida Convention)

A luncheon meeting was held on 22 May at the Bird Key Yatch Club., featuring a panel discussion on Kosovo problem, The Implications for the UN, NATO and the USA. The panel includes Dr. Robert Barylski, Political Science Professor at New College, Scott Behoteguy, senior offical at the US State Department, and Waldo Proffitt former editor of the Herald Tribune.

*Workshop
A workshop on A Marshall Plan for the Balkans?, was organized on Thursday, 16 September at 3:00 pm at Selby Library Auditorium. The key speaker was Mr. Paul R. Porter one the principal architects of the Marshall Plan in Europe where he served as Assistant Administrator to Averill Harriman in Paris. He also served as Deputy U.S. Representative to NATO. Light refreshnents were served before the meeting.

A worshop on Basic Introduction to the United Nationswas held on Saturday afternoon October 9 at the Jack Geldbart Auditoriom at the Selby Library, from 2 to 4 p.m. This worshop was animated by Dr. Margaret Bates (UN structure), Scott Behoteguy (US/UN relations), Wade Matthews (peacekeeping) and Dr.Daniel Luu (UN Technical Cooperation.

* UN Day Celebration
The celebration of UN Daywas held on Saturday 23 October at El Conquistador Country Club in Bradenton, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. After the luncheon, Ambassador Betty King spoke on the United States at the Millennium:The Overgrowing Economic and Social Agenda. She is the United Stated Representative to the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), appointed by President Clinton.

*Luncheon
A joint luncheon meeting with the Sarasota League of women Voters,was held on November 15 at 11:30 a.m. at Waterside Room, Sarasota Quay. The key speaker was Amb. David C. Litt, formerly the US Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates and as State Dept. Director of the Office of Northern Gulf Affairs, and currently Political Adviser to the Commander in Chiel of the Macdill Air Force Base. He spoke on Post Conflict Transitions-From Military to Civilian Initiatives
*Annual Meeting
The Annual Meeting of the Chapter was held on Friday, December 10 at 2;00 PM at the Selby Library. The guest speaker was Amb. Jamsheed Marker, formerly the Pakistan Representative to the United Nations and currently Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary General for East Timor. He spoke on The East timor tragedy - an eye witness account
An annual report was presented by Dr. Margaret Bates and approved by the membership.
Dr. Elenor Crawford, chair of the Nominating Committee, presented the slate of a new Board of Directors for election. The membership has elected 15 members of the Board of Directors for a period of one year, from January 1 to December 31, 2000. Dr. Daniel Luu was elected as new President of the Chapter, Mrs. Joy Anderson as new First Vice-President and Jo Williams as new Secretary
