The Truth About Impeachment and why Clinton Should Go!
For most of 1998 and part of 1999 we've heard all kinds of definitions of what constitutes an impeachable offense, how lieing under oath may not be perjury, the economy is good so we shouldn't impeach, lieing about sex is not a high-crime or misdemeanor, only treason or bribery constitute the former, and tons of other interesting and farcical justifications for letting this man violate his oath as President, a lawyer, and a citizen of this great republic while others sit in jail for the same offense.
Impeachment is a constitutional mandate placed upon the two houses of Congress and the Supreme Court. The decision to invoke or not invoke it is a moral, legal and political one. In order to make an informed decision about impeachment we must understand what impeachment is, what it is intended to remedy, and the circumstances under which it should take place
The truth is that the language of the constitution must be considered in terms of when it was written and what the authors were saying about it when it was being presented to the citizens of a youthful United States of America. The first and best source for this information is the Federalist Papers, a book containing editorials written by the framers of the constituion, describing the intent and meaning of the constitution. A dictionary of the times is also useful, as is the text of speaches and personal letters written by these same people.
