Vince Foster's Death (File #X307A) Updated 02-08-1998

Vince Foster's Body was found in Fort Marcy Park on July 20th, 1993 under rather suspicious circumstances. Those circumstances lead many to believe that he may not have committed suicide in the park. Many facts support the theory of many that Vince Foster may have been murdered. Others, while not ready to charge that Vince Foster was murdered, believe that he died elsewhere and was brought to the park. The facts that make this a top drawer "X-File" follow.

Vince Foster's body was found in a "coffin" position. Both hands at his side, laying perfectly prone, legs straight. This position is rather astonishing because the body would not normally fall to that position even if the person committing suicide were sitting.

Additionally, the gun remained in his hand. Typically the gun leaves the hand when fired due to a combination of forces. First, a weapon jerks when fired while developing its own velocity. Second, hand-grip co-ordination will disappear once the bullet begins destroying brain matter. Third, the body begins to fall. It's not uncommon for the gun to be found a foot or more away from the suicide victim. This gun remained in his hand, which was positioned neatly beside his body.

The normal suicide site conditions did not exist either. Normally, when someone shoots himself or herself by inserting the gun into their mouth (as Vince Foster allegedly did) the teeth are damaged, blood flows heavily from the soft mouth tissues, and bits of brain, scalp, and bone are splattered around the victim when the bullet exits the head. This time, however, there was no significant amount of blood. There was no brain matter, bone, or scalp fragments to be found either. Corey Ashford, a rescue worker loaded Foster's body into the bag told the FBI he didn't recall seeing any significant amount of blood and did not get any blood on his uniform or gloves.

What little blood there was creates another mystery. The blood tracks run uphill from the body. Normally, thanks to gravity, fluid flows downhill. In this case the small amount of blood that there was tracked from the body uphill.

Forensics experts also found no dirt, mud, grass, or other materials on Vince Foster's shoes. One would expect that a man walking 700 feet up a slope in a park would collect some sort of material in the soles of the shoes. None was found.

Eyewitness testimony, by Mr. Patrick Knowlton, indicated that there might have been a person present at the site. He called the authorities to let them know of the man that he saw while he was at the park that morning. It wasn't until independent investigators began researching this that attention was paid to Mr. Knowlton. The drawing shown here is of the man seen at the site.

Two other important facts surround this case. The first is that the bullet was never found, despite intensive searches. Searches resulted in finding several Civil War slugs. The second fact is even stranger, since Vince Foster supposedly drove himself to the park before committing suicide. Vince Foster's car keys were never located.

There are several other issues related to this case that are not covered in detail here because they deserve X-Files of their own. These issues include the sudden ransacking of Vince Foster's office, which should have been sealed. The briefcase searched for documents and found empty at one point which later produced a torn-up suicide note. The fact that the suicide note was missing the piece which would have his signature on it. Immediate announcements of "shock" and "surprise" by the President were followed later by claims that there was a general concern about Vince Foster's suddenly discovered battle with depression.
