The Alien vessel shot down over Roswell, New Mexico, had come to Earth to try to re-establish contact with the alien Atlantis base which had gone suddenly silent several thousand years ago.
Although the aliens had faster than light travel, they could not spare any space craft to investigate the Atlantis disappearence due to the war, which had ravaged their galaxy.
