CALIFORNIA
U.S. STATE CALIFORNIA
The Mexican territory of Upper California was occupied by U.S. troops in 1846
and was formally ceded to the U.S. in 1848 by the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
After a period of military rule the territory became the U.S. State of
California in 1850. (1)
(1) State of Jefferson
Starting in 1852, when representatives of Northern
California introduced a bill for the creation of a
separate State of Jefferson in the California State
Legislature, the residents of Northern California
and/or South Oregon - feeling neglected by their
respective far-away state governments - made several
attempts to create a separate political entity in the
region :
1877 : attempt to create a State of Shasta covering
Northern California.
1909 : attempt to create a State of Siskiyou covering
Southern Oregon.
1935 : attempt to create a State of Jefferson covering
Northern California.
1941 : attempt to create a State of Jefferson.
While all previous attempts had for the most been
limited to "paper-work" and "wishfull thinking", that
of 1941 was somewhat more succesfull as it resulted
on nov 27 1941 in the proclamation of the State of
Jefferson (covering several counties in Northen
California and Southern Oregon) and the establishment
of a regular government for this entity.
Counties included in the State of Jefferson
nov 18 : Counties invited to join the new State :
- From California : Del Norte, Modoc and
Siskiyou
- From Oregon : Curry, Jackson and

nov 27 : Counties included in the State at the
Proclamation of Independence
- From California : Del Norte, Modoc and
Siskiyou
- From Oregon : Curry
Modoc - threatened by the secession of
the ranchers of Surprise Valley in case it
joined the new State - had in fact given up
the idea of joining on nov 23. It continued
however to be considered as part of the new
State
nov 28 : Lassen County in California joined the new
State
dec 02 : Trinity County in California joined the new
State
dec 03 : Lassen County returned to California
