DANZIG / GDANSK
DANZIG*
The city of Danzig/Gdansk was within the jurisdiction of the diocese of Wloclawek
in Poland until 1818 when it was transferred to the Apostolic Administration of
Pomerania in Prussia.
Some years later, in 1821, after a reorganization of the hierarchy in Prussia the
city became part of the Diocese of Kulm (Pol.: Chelmno, since 1992 Pelplin).
After Danzig had become a Free City in 1920, its German inhabitants claimed its
inclusion into the German diocese of Ermland, while the Polish wanted it to stay
part of the - now mainly Polish - diocese of Chelmno. To end the quarrel the Holy
See established in 1922 the separate Apostolic Administration of Danzig, which in
1926, became an exempt diocese.
