ESTONIA*

Catholicism was introduced in Estonia in the course of the 13th century. In the 17th century, when Estonia came under Swedish rule, the Catholic Church was practically expelled from the country, the only remaining catholics being some foreigners. In the 19th century there was a revival and in 1844 the first modern church was build in Tallinn. The territory was part of the Russian Archdiocese Mohilev from 1783 to 1918 and then of the Latvian Diocese - later Archdiocese (1923) - of Riga. In 1924 it became a separate Apostolic Administration, directly dependent of the Holy See.
