LUXEMBOURG

LUXEMBOURG*

Catholicism was introduced in what was to become Luxembourg in the course of the 4th century. The territory was included in the French Diocese of Metz from 1801 to 1823 and afterwards in the Belgian Diocese of Namur. In 1833, after the occupation of Luxembourg by the Belgians, an Apostolic Vicariate "ad interim" was established for the city of Luxembourg, the only place remaining under Dutch control. In 1840, after part of Luxembourg had been restored to the Dutch King, the Vicariate was extended to include the whole Luxembourg territory. In 1870 it became a Diocese directly dependent of the Holy See. ____________________________________________________________________________ Bishops 1870 - 1883 Nikolaus Adames 1813 - 1887 1883 - 1918 Jean Joseph Alphonse Koppes 1843 - 1918 1918 - 1920 vacant 1920 - 1935 Petrus Nommesch 1864 - 1935 1935 - 1956 Joseph Philippe 1877 - 1956
