NETHERLANDS
UTRECHT
Catholicism was introduced in the southern parts of the Netherlands in the 4th
century. It was however only after the convertion of the Frisians, in 695, that the
first Dutch diocese of Utrecht - which became an Archdiocese in 1559 - was erected.
After the introduction of the Reformation in 1573 the regular hierarchy was replaced
in the Reformed part of the country by the Apostolic Vicariate of the Netherlands,
the so-called "Hollandse Zending" (Hollandic Mission) which formally continued to
exist until 1853 when the regular hierarchy was re-established (1)
(1) In 1717 the resident Vicar Apostolic was expelled by the Netherlands
government and in 1727 the Papal envoys to the Southern Netherlands,
toke charge of the mission.
As to the (Reformed) Netherlands themselves, they were now divided into
7 Archpriestships :
- Drenthe en Salland - Holland en Zeeland
- Gelderland - Twente
- Groningen - Utrecht
- Friesland
(Two Archpriestships in Germany - Kleef and Lingen - also were part of
the jurisdiction)
For the parts of the Netherlands which remained Catholic see :
- Breda
- 's-Hertogenbosch
- Roermond, which also covered lands not part of the United Provinces,
(future Limburg)
See also the OLD CATHOLIC CHURCH which emerged in this period.
