NEW SOUTH WALES

BRITISH COLONY OF NEW SOUTH WALES

The British Colony of New South Wales was founded in 1788 when a settlement for deported British convicts was established on the south eastern coast of Australia. (1) Convict transportation ended in 1851 and the same year the colony was granted internal autonomy. (1) At first the colony encompased all of Central and Eastern Australia, but in the course of the 19th century several other British colonies were carved out of its territory : - 1825 : Tasmania - 1836 : South Australia - 1851 : Victoria - 1859 : Queensland (Western Australia was only ruled by New South Wales 1829 - 1831) In 1863 the last part of New South Wales outside its present frontiers - the northern part of Australia - was transferred to South Australia. Non Australian dependencies of New South Wales included : - Lord Howe Island (since 1788) - Macquarie Island (1810 - 1890) - New Zealand (may 21 - nov 16 1840) - Norfolk Island (1788 - 1844 and since 1897) __________________________________________________________________________________
