NEW YORK
US STATE OF NEW YORK
The Dutch Colony of Nieuw Nederland (New Netherland), established in 1623, became
an English possession - renamed New York - in 1674.
It declared its independence in 1776 and became an original state of the Union. (1)
(1) Fearing that a war between the US and the secessionist South would harm the
economic interests of the city of New York, mayor Ferando Wood (1812 - 1881,
in off. 1860 - 1862) proposed in 1861 the secession from the US and the
creation of the sovereign state of the Free City of Tri-Insula (covering the
three islands of Manhattan, Long Island and Staten Island) which then would
be able to continue its lucrative business with the South.
The idea had however little support and was soon abandoned. But agitation -
culminating in the "New York City Draft Riots" of 1863 - continued for some
time.
