CARNEY, OKLAHOMA

POPULATION:  649 WONDERFUL PEOPLE
Carney is a little secret kept from the rest of the world.  We have reserved this little oasis for ourselves for more than 100 years.  Many of our families originally came to Carney riding in wagontrains.  Attracted by our spring waters the wagontrains passing through the territory made the area an overnight stop.  Some, believing they had found the land of milk and honey, simply never rode on down the trail.  For this reason, Carney was originally to be called Cold Springs, Oklahoma.  Here is what is great about Carney in no particular order:
* Carney State Bank-Locally and family owned, heck they not only know your name but your kids and their's will probably have sleepovers.  Robbed in 1914 by Henry Starr-The Cherokee Badman.

*
Carney Public School (K-12)-New High School with one of the lowest teacher to student ratios in Oklahoma.  There were fifteen students in my class.  Many of our teachers plant roots here and never leave.  They and their families become a vital and honored part of our community.

*
New school gymnasium-Our secret almost got out when our girls went to the state basketball tournament in 1999, GO BULLDOGS.  Oh yeah, we got baseball too.

*
3 Community Churches-Christian, Baptist, and Assembly of God.  Many of our kids attend youth functions at more than one church.  As a rugrat I went to all three vaction bible schools to get out of farm chores.

*
Carney Cafe-featuring good ole country cooking and pies.  Don't be surprised if you see the banker and an oil field worker at the same table arguing over who will pay their check, funny thing the oil field worker usually wins and is allowed to pay, just jokin .....I don't want my loan called.

*
Tommy's Filling Station-a great place to gather for a bottle of pop and to hear a good bull story (liquor around back so the preacher don't see your truck).

*
Dornan's Grocery Store-Fresh produce and steaks cut as thick as your wrist to serve your friends or as thin as a pancake for your inlaws.  Dornan's also has farm supplies.  Stop here to feed your family and your cows, Mr. Dornan will happily mark the sacks so the cows don't windup with the family's groceries.

*
Active Seniors Center-WE LOVE OUR SENIORS, A hot meal is served everyday at noon followed by quilting or dominos.  This is also a great place to find a fishing buddy for the day.  Newcomers are quick to learn not to believe everything they hear around the domino table, no Geronimoe's horse isn't buried in an unmarked grave in the cemetery, but go ahead and look if you must.

*
Cemetery-it is a beautifully manicured park setting on a hill overlooking miles of countryside.  It is so pretty we do not need a fence to keep people in or out.

*
Tradesmen are abundant-Need a new brickhome built for about 2/3 the price of its finished value?  Beware all the men in town will showup to check on the progress.

*
Farmers young and old-The countryside is dotted with traditional family farms.  At the store or cafe advice is as bountiful as the land.  FYI-The most advanced agriculture technology center in the world is a half hour away at Oklahoma State University, we know because they call us for advice..

*
Car, truck, and tractor repair is available.  Before you ask, no his rack will not hold a John Deere but it will hold a haybaler...I lost twenty bucks on that one.  Mufflers installed $20.00, $30.00 if you help him.

*
The prettiest girls in the state are in Carney.....no, really.

*
Video rentals and adult supervised arcade for the kids...meaning no kissing but holding hands is okay.

*
Police-Chief Wilson protects the peace.  Born in Carney, he left us for awhile to serve Uncle Sam and then received his training on the big city police force before returning to Carney.  The kids stay out of trouble because Chief Wilson knows all their parents.  He has also done commendable work keeping our town drug free.

*
Car Wash-Not recommended for children or pets...a few found out the hard way.

*
Affordable housing is plentiful in town or the countryside.  Actually, its cheap but that doesn't sound as nice as affordable.

*
Cable T.V......finally we can stop driving to our crazy cousin's house in Stillwater to watch HBO.  We also get all of the Oklahoma City and Tulsa radio and television channels, I know what you're thinking, I'm way ahead of you...yep that means two channels of PBS, yiippee.

*
Bell Cow Lake-One of the Top 10 Bass fishing lakes in Oklahoma is ten minutes from town.  Let me tell you about the one I caught the other day........ah, don't get me started.

* There are no bars in Carney but my friend's dad has a pool table in his barn, B.Y.O.B.  Honk twice if the gate is closed and no derogatory comments towards Merle Haggard or he really might not tell us where he hid the cueball next time.  He already had to take down the ladder to the hayloft because of abuse.

* Lot's of wholesome summer farm work for the teenagers.  What that actually means is they are to tired to get into any trouble at night.  When summer begins a skinny kid with an attitude goes into the fields and at the end a muscled teen comes out....but still that dang attitude, oh well.

* No high school cliques.  If there were, there would only be enough for one kid in each clique.  The cliques in our town are called families.

* We have never had a homicide in our history.  However, 25 years ago, a neighbor shot my dog for chasing his cattle...and after I had spent all that time teaching that dog to stop suckin eggs.
