In the first chapter of his book, entitled the Gospel of John in the Bible, John declares that the Word was always with God, and that the Word was God, ever since the beginning. The Word created all things that have ever been created (including mankind) and is the author and source of life itself.
The Word then became flesh: that is, the Word (God) became a human being, and dwelt among us. That man was Jesus Christ, God in the flesh, the only Begotten Son of our Heavenly Father. Jesus was and is full of grace and truth.
Jesus lived a perfect life on earth, obeying all of God's commandments, and demonstrated and declared that God loved us. But Jesus also explained that every man and woman was separated from having a relationship with God because of the sin in their lives and that they needed a savior to be reconciled to a Holy God.
Jesus is the one and only Savior that God the Father had promised, through His prophets, to send into the world to redeem mankind from the penalty of sin - which is death and eternal separation from God.
Jesus died on the cross, taking the penalty for our sins, so that our sins could be forgiven by God and we could be reconciled to Him through faith in what Jesus did. Those who hear this message and receive Jesus as their Savior and Lord are forgiven their sins and given eternal life and will dwell in God's presence forever. That is why this message is called the Gospel, which means GOOD NEWS!
Below are the words John wrote about Jesus in the first chapter of his book:
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
There was a man sent from God, whose name [was] John. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all [men] through him might believe. He was not that Light, but [was sent] to bear witness of that Light. [That] was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.
He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not.But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, [even] to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. (John 1:1-14)
