fashion commentary

For the first two seasons, Manny has worn cute and simple clothes consisting of an assortment of t-shirts, sweaters, shorts, jeans, and jackets. Her hair has usually been tied back or braided. Now that Manny has reached high school in the third season, she changes her innocent, sweet look to trendy and skin-baring for popularity and attention. Her hairstyle is now long, flowing and wavy. First two seasons' notable looks: Her Pretty in Pink Molly Ringwald look (true to the eighties) in "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" and her daydream Cinderella gown (perfect prom dress!) and the outfit she wore on her big date with Craig (very pretty) in "Take My Breathe Away."

Manny's essentials: silver jewelry, especially large hoop earrings, lip gloss

episode: "U Got the Look"

outfit: sporty light blue tube top and pants with matching jacket and hat
comments: First new look and transitional outfit; cute; says that she's growing up.
rating: I would wear it!

outfit: thong outfit
comments: Attractive but over the top and daring especially for a high school freshman! It seems to be inspired by Jennifer Lopez and Honey Luv (formerly Premiere). The hat is kinda cute. The off-the-shoulder, tie top (with the visible bra straps) is really trendy. Where can I find a top like that! Her necklace VEGA$ and large hoop earrings make the strong, showy statement "money!" The jeans are incredibly low-rise so the rhinestone-studded thong is completely visible. Be careful when you sit! This dialogue comes to mind:

Paul: Hold it, I can see your bra and that sling-shot you're wearing.
Kerry: Must be Casual Sex Day at school.
Bridget: It's a thong.
Paul: It's floss.

John Ritter (1954-2003)
rating: I'd wear this outfit to a club or a party sans thong exposure.

outfit: "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World" (third outfit)
comments: The little flowery red jacket and "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World" top are really cute. In ultra low-rise jeans, be careful when bending or sitting down, especially when not wearing underwear. The pink cap is adorable.
rating: I would wear this outfit but with underwear (not showing of course).

episode: "Pride"

outfit: little sporty red jacket, colorful top, blue jeans
comments: Although this episode showed just a glimpse of Manny, she had on a cute outfit. Not much to say about it, though.
rating: It's a typical outfit that I wear.

outfit: sporty pink velour activewear and white tube top
comments: The outfit in all the promo shots. This urban outfit indicates Manny's activeness and athleticism. Aside from the urban look, Manny's doing sporty chic. We see the VEGA$ necklace again and her cute pink fuzzy cap.
rating: cute, not my style so wouldn't wear it.

episode: "Should I Stay or Should I Go?"

outfit: little flowery red jacket and matching shorts
comments: The little jacket sighting #2 and pink fuzzy cap sighting #2. The jacket top and matching shorts are chic and bright.
rating: cute but too skimpy; I wouldn't wear it.

outfit: dark blue and white hoodie tank and jeans
comments: Cassie wore this top on the Crash Course. It's cute and regular compared to the others.
rating: my style simple and cute, I'd wear it anywhere.

outfit: dark pink tie blouse, blue jeans, red hat, dark jacket
comments: She looks mature, classy, and sexy. I like this outfit much better than the earlier ones. She's not showing off too much skin and keeping a little mystery. The old adage is right, less is more.
rating: I would definitely wear this out anywhere!

outfit: colorful one-shoulder top and denim miniskirt
comments: Another sexy outfit I like. She wears her clothes well. VEGA$ necklace again. Her top sort of looks similar to the one she wore in "Pride (1)."
rating: A little too revealing for me but I might wear it to a party.

episode: "Whisper to a Scream"

outfit: dark pink sporty jacket and pants, white shirt, light pink knit cap
comments: This episode only had Manny in it for a short scene. Hmm, how many sporty outfits does Manny have? This one, however, is somewhat different from the others because of its darker color, and she's wearing rectangular hoops.
rating: nice, but not for me.

episode: "Against All Odds"

outfit: brown crop top and beige khaki pants, VEGA$ necklace again
comments: Looks like Manny's toning her look a bit. Just some midriff showing. Cute and simple.
rating: It's not too skin-baring or too sporty--exactly what I'd wear it.

outfit: bright pink-yellow-orange tie top, blue jeans with bright pink thong showing
comments: Manny finally wears one of her, to quote Emma, "bootylicious" outfits to a more "appropriate" place: a rave. I like her top but too showy. I didn't expect to see another thong again. I liked Emma's shiny light blue top and dark pink mini-skirt.
rating: I might wear the top, but then again maybe not.

outfit: light pink and white sporty top and pants and dark pink jacket
comments: Reminiscent of the other pink activewear. She may be showing off some skin, but she's not overdoing it and just adding an extra layer or two. I like the jacket.
rating: cute, but not my style.

episode: "Never Gonna Give You Up"

outfit: sporty pink velour activewear and white tube top (from "Pride")
comments: see "Pride (2)"; Manny's sporty chic style.
rating: cute Manny style.

outfit: tropical yellow and orange one-shoulder top and beige pants
comments: It's sexy and cute at the same time. Not too much skin showing. Manny's top is just perfect for warm, sunny days.
rating: Definitely what I would wear.

episode: "Holiday"

outfit: orange hoodie jacket and black shirt

outfit: purple/dark blue skating clothes

outfit: purple jacket with light blue and white, matching scarf, blue jeans

outfit: black turtleneck, colorful brown sweater jacket, blue jeans
comments: The sweater jacket, especially the colors, is really pretty and warm. I love the fall colors.
rating: would wear it.

outfit: glittery purple flower-print blouse edged with ruffles, blue jeans
comments: The blouse is exactly what you'd find in my closet. It's just pretty and feminine. Typical jeans, too.
rating: I practically live in blue jeans and a pretty top like this one. I'm not crazy about the ruffles, though.

outfit: light pink sweater and pink sweatpants with the white stripe down the sides
comments: This outfit was just too cute. Who cares if she doesn't want to be "cute," she just is! So she should just deal with it. Anyway, it reminded me of what Manny wore in the first two seasons but more mature and suitable for her age.
rating: I have a sweater like hers somewhere.

overall: Since "Holiday" was set in the winter, all of Manny's clothes were weather appropriate. Her wardrobe seems to have slightly toned down for this episode but still maintains some sexiness with a little class. For the most part, not too much to say in particular about her wardrobe. I love her hair all curled. I'm beyond lazy to style my hair at all. Oh, I really adore JT's costume for the holiday show--very Dickens' A Christmas Carol.

episode: "Accidents Will Happen"

outfit: colorful tropical one-shoulder sleeve top, light blue cropped pants, beige cap
comments: I absolutely love the top. It's just sexy. The pants are cute, too.
rating: I would definitely wear it, but I typically don't wear cropped pants.

outfit: flowy long-sleeved orange-brown-black shirt, black pants
comments: This top is also sexy.
rating: This outfit is very classy, so I would wear it.

outfit: grey hoodie, blue tank, black pants
comments: Typical exercise wear.
rating: Who doesn't wear this when working out?

outfit: dark grey sweater, white blouse with grey swirls, beige pants
comments: I love the whole outfit. It's simple and classy.
rating: It's definitely in my wardrobe.

outfit: long-sleeved lavender top, blue jeans
comments: It's simple and understated.
rating: You'll always find these clothes in my closet.

outfit: dark red jacket, pink print top, blue jeans
comments: It's another simple outfit.
rating: Another outfit you'll find in my closet.

outfit: maroon activewear, pink top
comments: Another sporty outfit.
rating: It's cute, but I typically wouldn't wear it.

episode: "It's Raining Men"

outfit: dark pink sporty jacket and pants
comments: I like the soft, pastel pink, but this color is much prettier. No skin and weather appropriate. It seems that the slight change in wardrobe reflects how Manny's feeling.
rating: Like I've said, I typically don't wear sporty outfits.

outfit: colorful brown sweater jacket and beige jeans
comments: It's simple, pretty, and warm overall.
rating: Although I usually don't wear brown colors, I would wear it.

episode: "Our House"

outfit: red short-sleeved, velour jacket, colorful Asian style top, and blue jeans
comments: I absolutely love the jacket and top. The jeans are cool, too.
rating: I would wear it. Wait, I do wear it. It's practically my uniform.

outfit: black, race-track style blouse
comments: This blouse is definitely different: funky and unique.
rating: It's cool and cute, so I would wear it.

outfit: glittery purple flower-print blouse edged with ruffles, blue jeans
comments: The blouse is just pretty and feminine. Typical jeans, too.
rating: Pretty, but not too fond of the ruffles. I would wear it once in a long while.

episode: "Power of Love"

outfit: red sari
comments: Although I don't know much about Bollywood and the Indian culture, Manny's sari for the end-of-the-year dance is stunning.
rating: I would wear it to a similarly-themed event.

season three fashion stats:
activewear: 6
thong exposure: 2
caps: 8
overall comments: Season three of course was the dramatic image and wardrobe change for Manny. Although she went from adorable to sexy ("U Got the Look"), she didn't limit herself to one style. Her styles ranged from sporty chic to skin-baring and thong-exposing to sexy and classy at times. Even though Manny's bratty, better-than-thou attitude needed a major adjustment, her wardrobe always caught people's attention. Then after certain incidents ("Holiday" and "Accidents Will Happen"), her style has become more demure; however, this change can also be attributed to the colder weather. Even her hairstyles (down and wavy to buns and ponytails) reflect this change.

more comments: Manny's showy and trendy dressing brings up the issues of fashion today: too much skin? too tight? too expensive? too trendy? the messages? Clothes today do more than cover the body and keep it warm. It sends a message about the person's self, confidence, attitudes, etc. Through Manny, Degrassi: the Next Generation has touched upon certain fashion issues, such as certain clothes determine one' coolness and "social status" in school, as well as changing oneself to conform to a certain image and to attain popularity.
