news: Both D:TNG and Instant Star productions have wrapped for the season and celebrated with a party last night according to Exec Stohn.

I've read the article "Class Clown" from Maclean's about Kevin Smith's excitement and involvement in Degrassi. The article essentially talks about Smith's long-time interest in Degrassi, his involvement in the last three episodes, and the show's honest approach on serious and controversial issues, including abortion. It includes a quote from Cassie about Canadian and US fans' reactions:

That said, the new Degrassi class is pretty cute. Last summer The N took the actors on a mall tour, introducing them to the fact that, in one country at least, they had reached teen heartthrob status. "Here in Canada, we don't really get recognized a lot," says Cassie Steele, 14, who plays Manny. "Fans are laid-back, they're like, 'Hey, you're on Degrassi, ha ha, loser.' But in the States, you walk down the street and if people recognize you they're like, 'Oh my god, oh my god, does anyone have a pen?'"

The highest praise, though, came this month when Steele and the gang found out the most vocal fan of the original series has come to like the new one better. Back in 2001, Smith got a copy of the Degrassi: The Next Generation pilot and wasn't impressed. He was excited to see that the old cast came back for a reunion but wasn't interested in the new kids. It was three years before he checked in on the series again. "The kids had become better actors and much more intriguing and interesting," says Smith. "I fell hard for it because it kept the old characters that I loved and then I grew to love the younger ones. The Manny-Craig-Ashley love triangle was spellbinding."

• December 2 - Happy Birthday, Cassie!

• November 24 - I've added new affiliate Starlet Realm and in the media print section an old, short interview with Cassie Steele, "'Manny' loved Degrassi when she was a kid," from The Toronto Star.

• November 23 - news: Thanks to Danielle for the heads up, there's a Degrassi ecard available featuring Manny's "It Goes There" promo. Also on this page is a contest to win free stuff. Also, I, like Autumn and Danie, received an email from Cassie's promotional team. In 2005 is the launch of a new web site and the release of her first CD.

• November 20 - news: Everyone knows that Kevin Smith will be on this season's final story arc of the last three episodes. For direct links and more information visit View Askew Productions (The Kevin Smith/Degrassi Press Conference) and News Askew (Yay for Canadian rocker! Site contains some spoilers and pictures, including one with Cassie.). Be warned that some mature content are on these sites.

The shooting of Season 4 is winding down soon. If you caught Cassie's Unscripted, you may have noticed a new character. He's a new student Chester, played by Phillip Nozuka.
PS Degrassi Junior High Season 1 should be released on DVD soon.

• November 15 - Anticipation .... news: From Exec Producer Stohn via degrassi.tv:

I saw some of you on Friday, it seemed to be the day for giving tours of the set... it's great to see fans of the show and hear some of your comments first-hand!

A couple of answers to questions. First, I can't say whether Sean comes back or not, that is for the series to unfold however it unfolds! Second, I had already posted, but some of you maybe missed it, that the "big event" in the U.S. is NOT going to happen this year--it was supposed to be in late September, and it's not going to happen this year... maybe in 2005 but I'll let you know if and when it is going to come... Third I was talking to Funimation and they think the Season 2 DVD set will be released in June... And finally we don't know for sure whether there will be a Season 5, but since Degrassi is the top-rated Canadian drama on CTV and the top-rated show of any sort on The N, it's a pretty good bet there will be--besides next year will be the 25th anniversary of the first ever Degrassi show on the air, so we HAVE to have a Season 5, and some other real celebrations for it--the book is scheduled to come out in August and it is looking awesome, and we're talking about a documentary which will chronicle the 25 years of Degrassi and also give some sneak peaks into what might happen in Season 5 and beyond!!! AND there's other things we're talking about for Degrassi which are pretty exciting but I can't even hint at them yet...

PS Yes, I know geocities is being a nuisance with ads.

• October 21 - news: As you already know, Kevin Smith will be a guest star on D:TNG at the end of the season. In the article "High on Degrassi" from The Globe and Mail Smith mentions Manny.

If his five-year-old daughter Harley could grow up like any Degrassi character, Smith said he hopes its relative newcomer Manny Santos, played by Cassie Steele.

"Her character seems to have a good head on her shoulders. I'm certainly not an idiot. I know my kid is going to get out there in the world and experience it in the way I did when I was young. My friend Walter has a kid and he's always telling me how he doesn't know what he's going to do when she starts dating.

news article from NY Times: "Television's Most Persistent Taboo" By KATE AURTHUR

TWO 14-year-old girls are talking. One, named Manny, says to the other: "I'm just trying to do the right thing here. For me. For everyone, I guess."

The speaker is a character on "Degrassi: The Next Generation," a popular Canadian soap opera for kids, who is telling her best friend why she's decided to have an abortion. The two-part episode was shown on CTV in Canada in January. But the N, the Viacom-owned cable channel that shows "Degrassi" in the United States, has decided not to schedule the episodes.

Unlike such once-taboo issues as date rape, gay relationships and teenage sex, abortion on television remains an aberration. Manny is the very rare character who actually has one; what's even more rare is that she doesn't regret it afterward.

...

In explaining the genesis of their abortion episodes, the "Degrassi" writers said they felt a responsibility to speak directly to young viewers. Linda Schuyler, a creator of both the current version of "Degrassi" and of its 80's cult-favorite incarnation, "Degrassi Junior High," said: "If they're talking about it in the schoolyard, we should be able to talk about it on television." Aaron Martin, the show's head writer, described the character's choice. "She was presented with a lot of options, and she chose something that's the right and legal decision for her," he said.

Whether these two episodes will ever be shown on the N is unclear. The channel has postponed scheduling provocative "Degrassi" programs before, only to put them on later. Its official statement says it is an "editorial decision" that is "unrelated to any policy position regarding abortion." But Ms. Schuyler remains optimistic: "We're very hopeful that the N will show it when and if it's appropriate for them."

You have to register to read the article.
In regards to the episode of "Accidents Will Happen," I hope the N will show this episode since it deals with the very possible and life-altering consequences of sex such as teen pregnancy and its related issues. This issue of abortion is understandably controversial, but being aware and informed about it is necessary. If Season 4 does deal with the repercussions of Manny's decision, hopefully, the N will then air this episode, similarly to the past airings of "Jagged Little Pill," "Karma Chameleon," "Shout," and "How Soon is Now?" episodes. As these episodes indicate, one decision can affect a person for a lifetime.

• July 9 - updated keep watch and the fashion commentary in extra and etc. news: The degrassi.tv fan pages' actors section have been updated.

• July 6 - news and tidbits from The N's N'Sider: When visiting NY, Cassie bought a pet bunny. The Teen People issue featuring D:TNG with article, interviews, and photo spread should be out in October. The-Mary put up two pictures in her "Notes" of Andrea eating chocolate cake and of Andrea and Cassie on their way home from NY.
The N is having "THE SCENE TOUR" in malls of twelve cities. Two different Degrassi stars will visit each city. "The Degrassi Scene will feature an autograph area where you can meet the stars, a trivia center where you can win exclusive swag from Degrassi and The N, and a chance to enter the 'Win a Shot at a Spot on Degrassi' Sweepstakes. The dates and cities are 07/10 - Orlando, FL (Altamonte Mall), 07/17 - Atlanta, GA (North Point Mall), 07/24 - Dallas, TX (The Parks at Arlington), 07/31 - Houston, TX (First Colony Mall), 08/07 - Tucson, AZ (Tucson Mall), 08/14-15 - Honolulu, HI (Ala Moana Center), 08/21 - Los Angeles, CA (Glendale Galleria), 08/28 - Seattle, WA (Alderwood Mall), 09/04 - Denver, CO (Southwest Plaza), 09/11 - Omaha, NE (Oak View Mall), 09/18 - Chicago, IL (Spring Hill Mall), 09/25 - Boston, MA (Natick Mall).
