August 1, 2001 She made her parameters! No blood or platelets today -- which means, since her levels have come up on their own, she's making it herself! <happy dancing around the room, scaring the nurses>. As always, her latest counts are on the Blood Work page. Other than that, last night was not fun. They've taken her off almost all of her meds, and her body is trying to get used to her drinking/eating a little. She was *so* sick for about 4 hours last night - and was having some problems with it coming out *both* ends. Luckily, other than an episode this morning, she's been doing pretty well. As soon as I finish this up, I need to get her up and into the shower before PT and the doctor show up. We found out some things yesterday that just never occured to either of us. She has no immune system -- that we realized. But we didn't understand that Shay is basically the same as a newborn, but without the antibodies that the mother passes on. She has no resistance to anything -- even the things she had in the past, like chicken pox and the flu. So she will have to take all of her vaccinations over again, she will be super-susceptable to colds/flu/any infection that comes around. It will take about 2 years to get her immune system back to where it should be. Sigh... We also had a wonderful phone call from the Candlelighters rep in Austin who was working with us down there. Cynthia is the one who set up the laptop for us -- so a big "Thank you!" to her. And, if Dr. Wells in Austin reads this - "Hi!". <G> More later, if anything exciting happens. Keep the appendages crossed and good thoughts coming our way. Hugs and kisses to all... Missy Home Page |
