Okay, I know I haven't updated for awhile, so I'll make up for it now <G>

Shay went into the hospital on Sunday for an infection in one of the lumens of her broviac.  The white lumen was showing a staph infection, which if it went systemic, could become *very* bad for her.  So, into the hospital on IV fluids and antibiotics.  She was running some fevers (usually less than 101 but she did spike some).  However, since Shay runs cooler than normal anyway (usually around 97.7 or so), even normal is warm for her.  She was actually feeling pretty good the whole time - they were just being very cautious.

Today, the culture on the white lumen came back negative but the red one is now growing the staph!  So, Dr. Eames decided that they had played around with it long enough and just had the surgeon come to take the broviac out.  (This isn't unusual - they start thinking of taking it out around T+60 or so - and we are that).  And when she said they would *yank* it out, she meant YANK it out!  The surgeon came in, got ahold of it and started pulling!  I thought Shay was going to squeeze my fingers off before he got done.  Afterwards, she said it didn't hurt as much as feel 'icky'.  Imagine, this is a plastic tube that goes into her main vein in her chest.  She said she could feel it wiggling around on the way out (and it was about 10 inches inside).  Anyway, it is gone now, and hopefully this will help her turn the corner.

She missed her sisters' birthday, so we'll have to make up for it somehow when she gets home.  Maybe between the two of us, we can give Cassie her birthday spanking! <G>
