September 7, 2001 Shay is still in the hospital and today was one bitch-kitty of a day. I had put off going up, because one of the ladies who works here at the house is a Mary Kay rep and was doing makeovers - Cassie wanted me to get one with her. These were at 1:30, so I figured I would get all made up, then go over to the hospital and give Shay a good giggle. About 2:15, the phone in the kitchen rings, and it's for me. It is one of Shay's nurses calling to tell me that they have pulled out Shay's IV that was in the top of her hand and are planning on putting in a PIC (it is an IV type thing that goes in the bend of the elbow). Since they were actually fixing to *do* this, they finally decided to call and see if I wanted to be there. I didn't even bother driving over - I called Security and had them drop me at the front door. Got up there and we were ready to go. They stuck her the first time, and got the vein right off - but couldn't thread the lumen in, and by the time they got it threaded enough, it was clotted, so they had to give up on that side. Moved to the other side, and stabbed/poked/wiggled it around without even finding the veins. At that point they gave up (these were ladies from Home Health) and they left. Now Shay has no IV, is 4 hours late getting her antibiotics and hurts like hell. Now it is time for Paige and Glenda, her nurses to try. Shay has deep veins anyway, and they just kept missing it. Finally, after a total of *7* sticks, they got one to stay in her right forearm. Started running her meds and Shay said it didn't burn or anything, so this is good. The *bad* news is that she is still in the hospital and - just before I left - had started running another fever. Not a high one (37.7 C - 99.9 F) but since she shouldn't be running one at all, this is not a good sign. The hospital doesn't seem to concerned, so I'll try to relax. (Just called again - and it's gone up to 37.9 C - I'll worry about it in the morning.) I've started walking back and forth to the hospital - which isn't bad early in the morning, but by late afternoon, sucks BIG time! I don't know if I'm going to lose any weight, but I might scare off a mugger or two by being a large, sweaty lady! <G> Missy Home Page |
