The Final Commission |
Chapter 2 |
“Do you plan to take the emissary’s papers?” “I will see to them. If they are of the Protestant style, I will pass them to ye as always.” He shook his head, “But I have a mind to think that the Frenchman may be in danger. What he carries has a lot o people interested, no just our usual players.” “You are aware of the reports that a small legion of thirty or so English nobility landed in Amsterdam not but a week passed? It is rumored the Duke of Arrondale is their leader.” “Nay, I was unaware o the fact. Any reports of their location now?” “None. They travel in hiding, no doubt.” “Interestin’. I will see what is said in Hamburg.” “Will I see you at camp when you are finished?” Iain sighed, “Nay, I will ride on te Calais when I am done with Hamburg.” “Then God-speed you safely home Iain MacGregor.” “And the same to ye General Tilly.” The two men embraced, clapping each other on the back for luck and for camaraderie. “I will miss you Iain, you are the best at your skill.” “Thank ye General. I have never served a better man.” Iain bowed, then quickly ducked out of the tent. He carefully picked his way down the snow slippery embankment towards the encampment. Iain scanned the faces of the men around the campfires till he located his man and the Private who had accompanied them on the last mission. Duncan and Private Drake were supping with fellow soldiers, when the men rose as their outranking officer approached. “At ease men.” Iain stated in German. |
“I suppose I shall learn soon enough. And if the Grand-Duchess entertains some Frenchman then we shall surely ken what game she plays.” “No Iain, I can not in good conscientious allow you to go. I have your papers and final wages here. And you know the Minotaur awaits you in Calais, of course for as long as it must.” the General added. He removed two folded parchments, as well as a rather heavy bag of coins sliding them towards Iain. Iain smiled, “I’m rather curious te see just what awaits me in Hamburg.” “Yes, always ever ambitious to play the game, and how shall you manage back in your homeland of Scotland? With nothing to do?” “I think I shall find a ripe lass and have many bairns. That always seems to prove the hardest challenge.” They both shared a laugh. “I will see that the Duchess Seislach receives her letters as soon as I send copies to Maxmillian.” “O’ course. And the Corporal?” “He is at your disposal.” “Aye, I will send him back to ye with the information I learn in Hamburg.” |
