Chapter 1
“Drink?”
“I er… I don’t…”
Sky’s head was in turmoil. She couple barely comprehend what had just happened, let alone the repercussions and what it all meant. For two days all she’d been focussing on was telling Dylan. Anything beyond that hadn’t even crossed her mind. But now that was over real life was staring her straight in the face and she couldn’t handle it.
She blinked and made her eyes focus, instead of staring at everything and nothing like she had been since they left Karl’s doctors surgery. She tried for a moment to figure out what had snapped her out of her daze, before she realised Dylan’s hand was resting on her shoulder.
She was slumped on the sofa, and as Dylan talked to her it sounded like he was some way behind her in the kitchen. Not that she cold hear what he was saying, or would have even listened if she could.
Dylan was crouched down on the other side of the sofa arm. His big brown eyes smiled up at her. AS her lifted his hand from her shoulder he started playing with a lock of her hair, without even knowing he was doing it. “You ok?”
What stupid question, of course she wasn’t ok. For a brief moment she felt the urge to snap just that right back at him but it only lasted a moment. He was trying his best. He felt just as lost as her right now, he was just trying to lighten the mood.
She managed a weak smile back, and a timid ‘yeah’. He saw through that, she knew it. It was a feeble attempt to stop him worrying but Sky knew before the words even left her mouth that it didn’t have a hope in hell of working.
Sky shuffled round and turned to face him. “It’s just… Big, you know?”
He nodded, worry etched on his face. “Not too big though. We can deal with it.”
Sky wasn’t sure. She didn’t feel sure about anything anymore. But something happened when she looked at him, something made her believe every word he said. She looked at him, pleaded with him to reaffirm what he’d just said. She needed to know they’d get through this.
“Babe…” Dylan paused, searching for the words. “If we stick together we can get through anything.” He paused again and a smirk spread across his face. “Nothing’s too big or small for SuperDyl!”
Sky smiled too, a real one this time. “Cheesy!”
Dylan shook his head and his grin mellowed. “Give me a hug.”
Sky leaned over and wrapped her arms around his neck, his strong muscular arms enveloping her too. He kissed the side of her head and nuzzled into her neck.
He felt Sky tense and she pulled away, covering her eyes with her hands.
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry. I’ll stop in a minute I swear.” She shook her head defiantly and sniffed, trying to keep her tears at bay. “I thought I’d done enough crying at the surgery to last me at least a day.”
“Sky, you don’t have to stay strong in front of me. I don’t care. You can turn into a blubbering heap on the floor if you like. I’ll make sure Oscar doesn’t mistake you for a beanbag.”
“Stop it Dylan, this is serious!” She was trying to sound harsh but her smiling eyes betrayed that. How could he always make her laugh? She took a deep breath and composed herself. “This is serious Dylan.”
He too turned serious. “I know it is. I’m just as lost as you Sky, I don’t even know where to start.”
“We need to tell people, I know we do, I’m just not ready.”
“Me neither. God, can you imagine the ‘I-told-you-so’ from my mum?” As he said that Dylan brought a hand to his head, rubbing his forehead. Sky watched him. She could tell how hard it would be for him to explain everything to his mum. The poison, the baby. She knew how long he’d worked trying to forge a relationship with her. And it had worked.
But she knew Janelle. She’d just take all this as a sign that Dylan was returning to his old ways and disown her son.
“You’re gonna have to tell your family eventually.” Sky stopped. “So will I.”
Dylan got up off his knees and came to sit on the sofa next to her. “Your family will be fine. They love you, they’d support you no matter what.”
“I know, you’re right. But…”
Sky’s barrier began to crack. “I can’t handle it, I can’t…” Dylan embraced her again, and she sobbed into his shirt despite herself. “I can’t handle the disappointment. Grandad, Dad…”
“You don’t have to do anything yet. I think we should wait until we’ve got our head around it.” Sky nodded. “Come here.”
Dylan smiled. He brushed her hair out of her face and kissed her lightly on the lips. “Don’t worry, ok?” Sky nodded again, not really sure what else to do. But how could she not worry?
“I’m trying not to think about it. In case it hits me how huge this all is, you know? I mean, I’m pregnant. Not only that, the baby might be ill… Oh god….”
Dylan held her tighter than ever. “This is our problem, for us to deal with together. I’m not going anywhere.”
He said all that into her hair, her face was buried in his chest. “I love you Sky.”
“I love…”
“Hey!!!!!!!! We brought Pizza, hope you’re hungry.” Janelle stopped in the doorway, Janae and Bree close behind. She spotted Dylan and Sky embraced on the sofa. “Don’t mind us kids, carry on.”
She smirked and the three Timmins women scuttled into the kitchen. Sky looked at Dylan. They were both thinking the same thing, they couldn’t deal with this now.
“Hey, Scotty bailed on dinner, there’s plenty of pizza if you want to stay Sky.”
Sky shook her head, afraid to speak incase she burst into tears.
“Sky has to go mum” Dylan called back. “We got lots of homework.”
“Rubbish, it’s a Saturday night! Aussie Idol’s on, you can stay for a couple of hours can’t ya?”
Sky squeezed her eyes shut. She guessed she didn’t have much of a choice.
