Promise

Comfort sat on one of the hard blue sofas in the A+E staff room , cradling an empty coffee mug and staring into space. He shift had ended ages ago. They had brought in their last patient of the night a good 20 minutes ago, and she suspected that Nikki was half way home by now

It was getting late, she should be at home too but Comfort couldn't bring herself to leave. It was stupid. Fin was upstairs with Emma; he wouldnt be interested in seeing her. She still felt like she should be there for him, just in case, whether he needed her to be or not.

There was a knock at the door and comfort jumped, and then settled slightly when she saw who it was. She was still on edge though. How could she not be when her lover's child was in ITU?

Comfort quickly tried to shake herself out of her self-pity. "Hey Nik, I thought you had gone home?"

Nikki strode over to the sink and washed out a mug. "Nah, I wanted to stick around and see if Tony had heard from Jack."

"And?"

"Nope!" Nikki answered with a slightly annoyed tone and turned around with a fairly indifferent look on her face. "And frankly, I dont care. If he doesn't want to speak to me and face up to his actions, then fine!"

Comfort gave her a skeptical look but didnt say anymore and Nikki turned back to the kettle.

"So, how's Emma?"

Emma. Damn. She didn't want to be reminded of the situation again, it was just too

"Umm She's stable." Comfort stopped herself from starting down that train of thought again and making herself more upset

"And Fin?"

Comfort sighed and rested her head in her hands, sweeping her hair out of her eyes. "I dont know, I haven't seen him."

Nikki carried her mug over from the kitchen area and sat down, looking at Comfort in mild shock. "You haven't seen him?"

She leant against the back of the sofa in thought. "No."

"You're afraid of getting in the way, is that it?" Nikki got more comfortable on the sofa and gave her colleague her full attention. Comfort shuffled uneasily but let her continue. "If that's what it is, dont feel like that. Fin loves you, he needs your support."

Comfort stood up and walked across the room, trying to avoid the uncomfortable issue of her current love life. "I wouldn't be so sure."

Nikki set her mug down on the table and sat forward. "What do you mean?"

Comfort sighed. She had been keeping all of these feelings to herself, desperately wanting to talk to someone. But now that someone was here, willing to listen, she wasn't sure she wanted to share.

"Hes being pushing me away" she said finally. "He doesn't want to talk to me."

"Im sure that's not true."

Comfort threw her hands up in quiet desperation and shook her head. "He wont open up. All I want to do is help him."

Nikki stood up and started to walk over to her.

"I want to be there for him. I could help him through this if he just told me what was on his mind." Comfort paused for a second and looked more upset. She walked briskly towards the door. "God. I cant believe Im saying this."

Nikki watched her friend and looked on, confused. "Say what?"

"Fins' little girl is seriously ill upstairs. She could still be dying and all I can worry about is how Im feeling. I cant blame him for not wanting to talk to a cow like me.

"Comfort..."

"Do you think I'm being selfish?"

They both sat down again on the sofa and Nikki placed a reassuring hand on Comfort's shoulder. "No, not at all."

"Well, how else could you explain? He's worried about his daughter. Why would he be thinking about me?"

"Because he loves you. And you love him too, right?"

Comfort nodded slowly.

"Listen, you care about him. You just dont want to let him go, thats all. Now go and find him and tell him that."

Comfort shook her head again and rubbed her forehead. "I dont know. I need some fresh air to clear my head."

* * *

Comfort stepped through the automatic doors into the ambulance bay. She wrapped her jacket tighter around herself in an effort to keep out the cold night air and took a deep breath to try and compose herself.

She spotted Fin's dark figure on the bench across the road and debated whether or not to let him know she was there.

She saw him lean across and throw something in the bin then slowly stand up and turn around, saving her from having to make that decision.

He looked across at her body, illuminated by the light flooding out of the hospital and gave a halfhearted smile.

He looked tired and unshaven and still had a worried look on his face. She thought of how terrible he must be feeling and decided in a panic that she couldn't face him after all.

She spun around, ready to head back inside but he called after her and jogged across the road.

"Comfort! Where are you going?"

"Umm Inside. You probably want to be alone." She began to walk away but he gently grabbed her arm and pulled her back.

Fin looked at her expression and responded with concern. "Why do you think I don't want to see you?"

"Its ok, I.."

"But I do" he cut in, "I want you to be there with us." Fin paused for a second in realisation, guilt evident in his over tired eyes.

Comfort look back at him with regret, suddenly wishing she hadn't said anything and bowed her head.

"I didn't mean to shut you out. I guess I've just been so caught up with Emma that Ive been ignoring you. I'm sorry."

Comfort leant in closer and lovingly touched his face. "It's fine, you have every right to be worried about your daughter."

"No, it's not fine. I dont want to loose you."

"Youre not loosing me. Im sorry, you don't need to be worrying about me too."

"That's my job description, girl!" Fin smiled at her and kissed her forehead. "I better get back inside. The doctor said she'll be waking up soon, and I want to be there when she does."

He gave her a tender hug and kissed her again, this time lovingly on the lips.

Comfort stood there, watching him walk back into the hospital. He turned around once her reached the door and flashed her one of his trademark cheeky smiles, reminding her exactly why she had fallen for his charms.

She called to him before he disappeared inside. "Promise you still need me?"

"Always."
