Oh God! What had she done? After spending all this time convincing Max and, more importantly, herself that she no longer had feelings for Sean, Tina had gone back on everything she had said in a moment of bad judgement and stupidity.
At least, she was trying to tell herself that's all it was but her true feelings betrayed her common sense. Rationalising everything doesn't work, she had learned that from experience, yet somehow, she could not admit her true feelings to herself, let alone the two men it concerned.
She hated herself for what she was doing. It wasn't fair on either of them. She had talked herself into loving Max and it just wasn't on and she had denied Sean what she knew he wanted and what Tina secretly longed for herself.
She had to figure out her feelings but she had spent all morning trying to build up the courage to talk to them and she had been avoiding them both like the plague. She was mentally no where near ready for such a mammoth task.
She sat alone in the staff room, cupping a hot mug of coffee, trying to give some order to the dilemmas swirling around her subconscious. All she had to do was tell Max she had slept with Sean, No big deal. Yeah right. It could be easier to talk to Sean first but she wasn't brave enough to face her will head on quite yet.
That decision was made for her though, when Sean's hand gripped her shoulder. She jumped, startled and nearly spilt her coffee.
"Oh God, Sean. You scared the life out of me!" She casually put her mug down on the table and stood up, forcing a, she hoped, indifferent expression onto her face.
Sean's face was a lot more serious. "We need to talk Tine" he told her, "Outside."
***
"You need to tell him, Tina" Sean told her, sternly when they had stepped through the doors onto the grass verge by the road, which was now lit up by street lamps. "It's not fair you leading on Max like this."
Tina flicked the hair out of her face and rubbed her forehead. Sean didn't seem to realise that it wasn't that simple.
"I know his son's just been killed and you feel guilty about leaving him and a sense of responsibility towards how he feels, but you have to think of yourself for a change."
OK, maybe he did.
"I will, just not yet. Stop pushing, OK?" That was Sean. Going on and on until he got what he wanted and not giving up. Overcoming any obstacles in his way. Including his boss.
Sean flung his arms up in desperation, and walked backwards slightly, moaning. "Just tell the guy we had sex, Tina. How hard can it be?!" Tina looked past Sean and stared wide-eyed.
Max. What a time to decide to have his break.
"I'm sorry... I..." Tina stammered, trying to rectify the situation. Max just stood there, watching them both side by side, still trying to figure out the shocking news he had just heard.
Max stared straight ahead. Tina could see the hurt and anger build up in his eyes. She was frozen to the spot, Sean as well, scared of what her might do. Tina still had her hand on Sean's arm, which probably wasn't helping.
Tina noticed and pulled away slowly. She didn't want to draw Max's attention to her contact with Sean on the slim off chance that he hadn't noticed. She didn't think he had, or if he did, he was too angry to say anything.
"Max please" she prompted, "Say something!"
"Sean" Max half growled under his breath then let all his emotion burst out at once. He flew forward, loosing it completely "I'm gonna kill you!"
"Just calm down!" Sean said apprehensively, backing away, but despite his efforts to diffuse the situation, he could tall Max Was too worked up to listen to reason, especially since it was coming from him.
"Don't tell me to calm down! Max yelled, "you slept with my girlfriend, I have every right to be angry!"
"Please don't!" Tina was close to tears. Watching the two men she cared about most in the world fighting was more than she could take.
"You must have done something" Sean retorted, never one to take abuse, "Ever think why she came to me in the first place?
Great, Tina thought. Fuel his anger. That'll help.
"Sean, leave it." Tina walked up to the younger doctor and put a hand on his shoulder, gently persuading him backwards. She then felt the same way she always had about Sean and couldn't help the way she looked at him.
"Great. Absolutely fantastic." Max shook his head in disbelief, noticing their body language. "You're not over him, are you?"
Tina looked up and saw the hurt expression on his face. She let go of Sean and turned away from them, her head in her hands, tears stinging her eyes.
"I'm sorry, Max. I want to be with him."
Sean walked up next to her and put his arm around her. "I'm sorry Max, it's true."
Max's demeanour completely changed. He had started to calm down but seeing them together, seeing another man with the woman he loved just pushed him over the edge.
Tina was genuinely terrified of what he might do.
"Son of a bitch!" He screamed and went for Sean.

"Boy, that was a complete waste of time." Penny leaned forward and put the road map back on the dashboard, turning to Josh. "Some people over exaggerate everything!"
Josh chuckled and shook his head. "Hypochondriacs hey? Oh well, at least we've finished now. One quick stop at the hospital then I can officially declare this shift over."
"Thank God!" Penny agreed and rested her head on the headrest.
"Tell me about it" he said and absently stared out the window, his mind half-asleep as he turned the corner and into the hospital grounds.

"Max! Stop it!" Tina screamed frantically, "It's not Sean's fault!"
Max only half heard her, only focusing on Sean. "You had your chance!" he shouted, pure anger rising to the surface. "You had her and you let her go! You blew it, Sean! She's with me!"
"But she doesn't love you!" Sean told him in desperation, wanting as much as Tina did for the situation to end. Maybe more, since she wasn't the one likely to get their head bashed in.
Max didn't say anything. He just lunged at Sean and punched him hard in the face.
"Max! Max!" Tina pulled him back but he was too strong. "Max, just listen to me!"
She was standing between the two men now, just inches standing between all of them. "Just stay out of this Tina" Max warned, "It's between me and Sean."
Max pushed her out of the way. Far too forcefully, and she fell. The hard tarmac of the road sending pain through her whole body.
Tina grimaced in pain and struggled to heave herself up off the cold, hard, damp surface.
The dark night was the illuminated blue and Sean stared in wide-eyed terror straight ahead.
"Tina!!!"

Penny screamed and grabbed the steering wheel. "Josh! Look out!"
Josh snapped back into reality and saw what his colleague was yelling about.
He slammed his foot on the brakes but the surface of the road, wet with dew and fallen leaves, prevented the tyres from gripping. The ambulance skidded out of control and would not stop.
He tried to swerve but there was an almighty thud as Tina hit the front of the vehicle.
"Oh my God" Josh whispered, unable to move. "Tina."

"Tina! Tina, wake up!" Sean ran towards her and knelt down, tears stinging his eyes and rested her head in his arms. "Baby, talk to me!"
Sean frantically searched for a pulse but in vein. He snapped his head up and looked at Max; shock, anger pain and disbelief all piercing Max's heart when he realised what that look meant. He was frozen to the spot in horror.
"What the hell have you done?!" Sean screamed, then collapsed in tears, cradling Tina's lifeless body in his arms.
