When were the religions of the world founded?

Jewish - founded by Abraham about 4,000 years ago.

Hindu - developed in India around 1,500 B.C.

Buddhist - split from Hinduism. and was founded by Buddha, Prince Siddhartha Gautama of India, about 500 B.C.

Roman Catholic - Jesus Christ began the religion in the year 33.

Islamic - Mohammed started the religion in what is now Saudi Arabia around 600 A.D.

Eastern Orthodox - separated from Roman Catholicism around the year 1000.

Lutheran - founded by Martin Lu-ther, an ex-monk in the Catholic Church, in 1517.

Mennonites - started in the Netherlands in 1520.

Church of England (Anglican) - broke from the Church of Rome in 1534. Founded by King Henry VIII because the pope would not grant him a divorce with the right to remarry.

Presbyterian - founded when John Knox brought the teachings of John Calvin to Scotland in the year 1560.

Unitarian - developed in Europe in the 1500’s.

Congregationalist -. branched off from Puritanism in the early l600s in England.

Baptist – founded by John Smyth, who launched it in Amsterdam in 1607.

Quakers – offshoot of Mennonites and began in 1650.

Methodist - founded by John and Charles Wesley in England in 1744.

Episcopalian - brought over from England, to the American colonies and formed a separate religion founded by Samuel Seabury in 1789.

Mormon (Latter-Day Saints) – founded Joseph Smith in Palmyra, N.Y., NOT Salt Lake City, in 1830.

Salva-tion Army -–founded by William Booth in London in 1865. (Yes, it’s a religious group, not just an organization that collects money in kettles on Christmas and serves dinners to the homeless.)

Christian Scientist - founded by Mary Baker Eddy in 1879.

Jehovah’s Witness - founded by Charles Taze Russell in Pennsylvania in the 1870s.

Pentecostal - started in the United States in 1901.

Amish - began in the 17th century and is an offshoot of the Mennonites.

Agnostic - profess an uncertainty or a skepticism about the existence of God or a Higher Being, original origin unknown.

Atheist - do not believe in the existence of God or any other higher power. This country’s best-known atheist, Ma-dalyn Murray O’Hair. has not been seen or heard from in several a years. According to her son, she has disappeared without a trace. Original origin unknown.
