Reminder
There are no secrets at the bridge table. Your
opposition is entitled to know your
bidding system, your agreements and your style.
The convention card is the means of communicating your system to
your
opponents. If you are a regular
partnership, both you and your partner should have a completed
convention card
ON THE TABLE for review by the opponents.
The two cards should have exactly the same content and it should
reflect
the system that you actually play! You
are responsible for knowing what is on the card. When
there is a question about mis-explanation
vs. mis-bid; the
convention card will rule as to what your agreements are.
This is a rule of the game, not merely a
nicety. So, carry your convention cards
with you and work to keep them accurate.
Review of
the New Rules
Because
I’m a
glutton for punishment, I’ve joined the bridge laws mailing list. This is a web mailing list where directors,
experts and members of the World Bridge Federation laws committee talk
(sometimes endlessly) about the laws.
They answer questions about ruling the game from others and I
suspect
they’ll have something interesting to say about the recent rules
changes. I’ll get to read through a bunch
of archived
messages to get up to speed, but then, I don’t mind that kind of thing.
Anyway,
if
anything interesting comes up, I’ll include it in a newsletter. But in any case, I’ll use this space to talk
about the new rules.
The
most important thing about the new rules is the shift from the concept
of
“penalty” to the concept of “redressing damage.” In
the revised rules, penalties are imposed only
for discipline and propriety infractions.
Irregularities during the game will be “rectified” if damage has
occurred
and then to restore equity. There are a
few places where the discretion of the director has been increased; in
the case
of the revoke rectification for example.
More about that later.
