Zero Tolerance
Policy
I have received several comments and complaints about zero tolerance,
so this is my attempt at a policy:
A zero tolerance call will result in:
(1) a request to cease and to issue an apology
if a second call is received on the same day -
(2) a 1/2 board penalty
if a third call is received on the same day -
(3) a suspension for 1 month
What constitutes
a
zero tolerance behaviour is often open to interpretation. For
example, not saying "hi" immediately when the next pair sits down is
not sufficient reason to take offense. On the other hand, gross
rudeness is obviously worth a call. There is ground in-between,
and I expect players to draw a reasonable and tolerant line.
Most interpersonal relations at the table can be resolved with ordinary
methods, without the intervention of a third party. A zero
tolerance call should be made when those ordinary methods are not
appropriate.
Rather than try and write a list, I will say that the director will
have discretion in determining the severity of a zero tolerance call,
with benefit of the doubt going to the complainer. I am aware
that this kind of approach is open to abuse. The director will
have discretion in that case as well. Over time, the community
will determine what is and what is not acceptable.
I invite your comments with the hope that you will allow your comments
to be made public in order to create a conversation about this topic.
