ISLAMABAD, Nov 9 (AFP) - The World Food Programme (WFP)
voiced optimism for the first time Friday that it could see six million
vulnerable Afghans through the winter, despite ongoing security concerns
and deteriorating weather. "We are gradually becoming more optimistic that
the race with hunger and snow in Afghanistan to reach all the people by
the end of the year will be won," WFP spokesman Khaled Mansour told reporters
in Islamabad.

Since the beginning of October, the WFP has trucked 49,000
tonnes of food into Afghanistan -- enough for five million people for one
month -- and is aiming for monthly shipments of 52,000 tonnes.

Security continues to be a major concern, Mansour said,
citing an unconfirmed report Friday that 30 tonnes of WFP food had been
looted in the central Afghan province of Ghor.
