As of 12 January, 380,499 children between the ages of six months and 12 years have been vaccinated in Kabul. Initial reports indicate that while 80% of the population under age 5 is being reached, only 37% of the population between ages 6 and 12 are coming to vaccination posts. Implementation of the measles vaccination campaign will continue through the weekend in the Kabul area (Central Region), as efforts are stepped up to increase the turnout of older children.

In the Northern Region, teams of the Afghan Ministry of Public Health, UNICEF, WHO and the Swedish Committee were in Takhar province to begin training and mobilisation for the Measles Immunization Campaign. 600,000 doses of measles vaccine and other immunization supplies arrived in Mazar-i-Sharif this week for further distribution to Takhar and Kunduz provinces.

In the Northeastern Region, the first phase of the Measles Immunization Campaign began this week in four districts of Badakhshan.

In the Eastern Region, the Afghan Ministry of Public Health, UNICEF, WHO and NGO partners plan to reach 41 districts with the Measles Vaccination Campaign between January and February 2002.

UNICEF continues to provide supplies and other support to home-based schools now in session and to prepare the public school system to receive students on March 21, the official start of Afghanistan's school year.

To support education for disabled children, UNICEF provided stationary equipment to 11 districts of Samangan, Balkh and Jawzjan Provinces in the Northern Region.

To ensure educational facilities for IDP children, UNICEF and People in Need Foundation will conduct minor repairs of the schools in the Sakhi, Kamaz and Chemtal IDP camps.

The supplies, which included pencils, pens, erasers, chalk, textbooks, blackboards, and notebooks, will benefit more then 4,400 students educated by 94 teachers at the primary education level in the camps and various home-based schools.

A two-week long training of female teachers in basic competency and learning ended on 26 December 2001 in Herat. A second training session began on 29 December 2001.

The renovation of eight schools for girls by German NGO HELP and UNICEF will be completed this week. 4,000 girl students have already registered to attend the eight schools in the Western Region.

Basic health equipment and medical supplies were distributed to 27,000 people living in Wardoge, a sub-district of Baharak (Northeastern Region).

A basic health kit was provided for the Assadabad Provincial Hospital in the Eastern Region, which will meet the medical needs of 10,000 people over a period of 3 months. Seven traditional birth attendant kits were also provided for the Methalam District.

UNICEF has provided medical supplies and drugs to seven health facilities in the Eastern Region to serve the needs of 23,000 children and women.

60 MT of medical supplies (syringes, midwifery kits, surgical instrument kits, emergency health kits and drugs) were dispatched to health units in Jalalabad.

Over 33,000 kgs. of UNIMIX (therapeutic feeding mix) were distributed to the supplementary feeding programmes for malnourished children around the city of Herat, bringing the quantity of distributed UNIMIX to around 53,000kg. The provision of supplementary feeding supplies in the country is coordinated with WFP, and UNICEF's main focus is on the provision of appropriate nutrition training for the supplementary feeding programmes.

A two-day workshop on nutrition was conducted by UNICEF at the Mazar civilian hospital with the Afghan Ministry of Public Health and several international and national NGOs. This workshop is part of UNICEF's ongoing strategy of building local capacity so that health workers are prepared to identify and treat various types of malnutrition among children.

UNICEF continues to install and maintain hand-pumps in most IDP camps in Afghanistan. In the Maslakh camp (Western Region), UNICEF has just delivered 82 hand-pumps. Together with IOM, UNICEF is also constructing 20 child-friendly latrines in the camp.

UNICEF continues to spur water and sanitation projects at the community level, as safe water and decent sanitation are essential to disease prevention and child survival.

Following the assessment of the WES rehabilitation in the Mazar civilian hospital, the local NGO NBR was contracted to construct a septic tank at the women and children's ward.

マザール民間人病院のWES復旧についての評価をうけて，ユニセフは女性・子供用病棟に汚水処理タンクを設置するために現地のNGOであるNBRと連絡をとった．

UNICEF assisted in the drilling of water supply wells and provided hand-pumps in various locations in Kabul city and Kabul Province, securing access to safe drinking water to 2,400 people.

In Kabul, UNICEF provide technical and financial support to the Hygiene Education training organised by the Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation Development.

UNICEF provided financial and technical support for the construction of one test bore well in the newly identified IDP camp location in Mirdaud (10kms from the Herat airport)

The cleaning of all septic tanks and the rehabilitation of central heating system at the Herat regional hospital was also supported by UNICEF.

UNICEF supported the replacement of two hand-pumps and the rehabilitation of the latrines in the Mehree School and assisted the cleaning of latrine pits and the construction of a bore well hand-pump in Hatifi School.

Shelter, clothing and footwear supplies provided by UNICEF are being distributed to 10,000 families in the Khuja Ghar District of Takhar Province this week. With this distribution, UNICEF is meeting the plans to cover urgent winterisation need for majority of the population in the Province.

UNICEF completed the planned distribution of around 60,000 sweaters and children's boots for the Herat area. 8,000 families were provided with blankets, bringing the total number of blankets distributed in Herat area to over 61,000 of the planned 76,000. In addition, 7,000 families received mattresses and various winter clothing items. The new distribution of 8,100 heaters brought the number of heaters to one half of the planned total. 1,000 families were provided with water tankers.

To date, one fifth of the planned winter clothing was provided for the children and women in Mazar and additional 400 families were equipped with heaters. BP-100 supplementary food was provided for the supplementary feeding programmes

A Basic Health Unit (BHU) is under construction in the new camp in Shalman (Khyber) and the construction of a BHU in the Mohmand camps is scheduled for mid-January.

UNICEF has supplied tents and equipment for a second health screening line at Mohamad Khail camp in Balochistan.

Renovation of a deep tube well has been completed and 36 water tanks, providing 15,000 people with 12 litres per day per person have been installed in Kotkai camp (NWFP). In addition, latrines have been dug for 11,500 people in Kotkai camp -- two thirds of which have been designated for women.

In Mohamad Khail (Balochistan) camp, 40 water tanks which will provide clear water supply to around 25,000 refugees have been completed. Additional 21 locally manufactured tanks have been connected to a newly refurbished well supplementing the water supply.
