YAHOO WEBGROUP

As an added benefit to the Calderdale Family History Society, we created a Yahoo! Group.

Yahoo! Groups are electronic mailing lists; a type of Internet forum. It allows for widespread distribution of emails to those who subscribe to a particular group. It is similar to a traditional mailing list.

As well as providing e-mail and archiving facilities, the Yahoo! Groups service provides additional functions on the web site, Some features are:

* Photo album: Organized into album/thumbnail structure.

* File storage: Capable of storing any file format.

* Link directory: Options for folders, text labels for each link.

* Poll: Moderators can create multiple-choice polls.

* Calendar: Scheduling system for clubs with regular events.

The Calderdale Family History Group can be found at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cfhswebgroup/ and is for those members who are interested in discussing their genealogy histories, sharing their work, finding others who are interested in exchanging information and becoming friends.

We are sharing our knowledge of researching records; connecting with other members researching the same name(s) and exchanging information likely to be of mutual interest. Some of our topics have included Emigration; Methodism; Health Related Issues in Genealogy; DNA Testing; Single Mothers in 1850; Military Records; Wills plus many other interesting topics.

Members of the group are encouraged to post photos of family members or towns and villages they are researching. Help in identifying the uniform an ancestor was wearing as well as help identifying a motorcycle was provided. Who knows, we may even be able to help you identify the time period or if you are lucky-the person or place in the photo.

We have an ever-expanding list of member websites as well as listings of other websites for researching the various aspects of genealogy. These websites are arranged by subject and by country of research since we know some of our relatives emigrated.

This is a young group-only 7 months old! So far, we have 67 members and growing. We would love for you to join us. So go grab your tea or coffee and pull up a chair.

Follow the steps below to join.

Click on “Join this Group”.

If you do not already have a Yahoo account it is quick and easy to subscribe.

If you already have a Yahoo Account then follow the steps below:

Step 1 is to confirm your contact information, and in the “Comment to Owner” section enter your name, address and/or membership number. I need this information to process your request for membership in the yahoo group as this is the only way I can determine if you are indeed a member of CFHS.

Step 2 is where you select how you want to stay in touch with the group. Most select “Individual Email”.

Step 3 is where you set your email preference, which is a choice between “Fully Featured” and “Traditional”. Most select “Fully Featured”.  Check out the samples provided to help you make the choice most suited to you.

Then you need to enter the text as it is shown in the box below. It is case sensitive so use capitals and lower case letters as viewed.

You will receive an email stating that your request has been received but not approved. Then you wait until I have a chance to view the request. I’m in Canada so, please be patient and allow for time differences. Once your request is approved, you will receive notification of the approval.
