Eric Sherkin
CFRC-FM's most heavily recruited talent since the glory days of Nick Sinclair and Adam Kaminsky, Eric Sherkin spurned the recruiting push of CFRC's then-sports director Chris Stewart and spent a redshirt freshman year at the University of Toronto. However, the hallowed microphones of CFRC (Canada's first university radio station) were frequently on Sherkin's mind, and he transferred to Queen's University in September of 1999. Immediately following his arrival in Kingston he was contacted by Sinclair and joined the CFRC sports crew.
In short order, he recruited Sean Diamond and they soon had their own sports show, "The Sports Explosion". Eric was also immediately thrust into the role as the colour commentator for Queen's University athletic events alongside veteran play-by-play voice Neil Acharya. Eric's role at CFRC has expanded to include regular commentary for CFRC and the Queen's Golden Gael football, hockey and basketball teams - including the Gaels' improbable upset victory over Western. Eric also called the play-by-play for the 2000 Carr-Harris Cup between Queen's and Royal Military College for both CFRC and Cogeco Cable Television, Channel 10 in Kingston. In early 2000, Sherkin brought rookie Dan Vertlieb into the fold to join himself and Diamond in a new late-night timeslot, and OVERTIME was born!
Eric enjoys many sports, and is well-versed in a wide range of sports knowledge. USA TODAY sportswriter Lisa Winston profiled Eric for his vast array of baseball knowledge, after Eric submitted a detailed proposal for how to modify the role of the baseball commissionership to regulate salary upswing - at the tender age of 12. While above all a baseball expert, Eric's knowledge extends into hockey, football, basketball, golf, tennis and many other sports.
Eric is working towards an Honours degree in political studies and is very involved with Queen's University. He is one of the two Deputy Commissioners of Campus Activities within the AMS and is responsible for the running of NEWTS orientation week, Queen's Model United Nations, Queen's Model Parliament, QCollege Instructional Training Sessions, Queen's Campus Games and Queen's First Year Not In Residence (FYNIRS) program. Sherkin's Overtime moniker is "The Sports Encyclopedia" due to his seemingly unmatched reservoir of sports knowledge. His keen mind for sports coupled with his dry wit makes him a valuable member to the Overtime team. Eric, as host and technician of the show, constantly brings new and insightful ideas to the conversation and backs them up with both historical and current facts - his vast experience in debating is evident, and he never, NEVER admits that he's wrong.
Of course, he rarely is. Just ask him.
Look for Eric to anchor Overtime next year as well as future CFRC live broadcasts, as he succeeds Neil Acharya as Voice of the Golden Gaels.
