UNKNOWN BURRUSS Abt. 1600 in Probably England. She was born Abt. 1580 in Probably England, and died Abt. 1616 in Probably England. He married (2) BRIDGET BUCK Abt. 1622, daughter of REV BUCK and GRECIAN LANGLEY. She was born Abt. 1605 in England.

John Burrowes (Burruss) came to Virginia in 1608 with the Second Supply. He was financed by the Englishman, Robert Gaile, who petitioned the Virginia Company in London England to give satisfaction, because he had made no return on his investment in John Burrowes' adventure.

John apparently survived the "Straving Times" , when most of the early settlers perished. When the census of 1624 was taken in Jamestown, Burrowes was living at his plantation called "Burrowes Mount".

and sometimes known as Burrowes Hill. In August of 1626 he petitioned the Royal Governor to "seat himself" upon the neck of land near James City so he may care for cattle due his ward, Mara Buck, daughter of Richard Buck. John Burrowes married Bridgett also a daughter of Richard Buck

John Burrows sold Burrows Hill (Burrows Mount) to John Smith. In the muster of 1624/25, John Smith and his wife Susanna, along with son Francis age one year, were listed as living at Burrows' Hill. William and Mary Quarerly Vol 16, page 222, 223.

20 September 1628, Book 1, page 62 Izabella Perry wife of Wm. Perry, 500 acres in James City bounded on the west by land of John Burrowes now in the tenure of John Smith.

Vol 16, page 12 - The Terriorty of Tapphanna over against James City, John Burrows has 150 acres planted.

Vol 19, page 235. Mrs. Bridget Broomfield, late widow of John Burrows has been one of the guardian of the children of Rev. Richard Buck. It further states that Christopher Burroughs and Benoni Burroughs are likely related.

Vol 19, pge 388. John Burrows, Gentleman has a plantation called Burrows Hill on the south side of the river near Paces Plains where he implanted six men.

John Burrows patented about 1624 150 acres on the south side of the James river above Jamestown and called his place "Burrows Hill." He married Bridget, the widow of Rev. Richard Buck, and was probably the father of Christopher Burrows by an earlier marriage.

Burroughs who was a prominent man in Lower Norfolk County 1640-52 ... had a son Benoni, so it is probable the family was related to Rev. Richard Buck.

Bridget first appeared in the records as Bridgett Burrows, the wife of John Burrows gent, when testimony was being taken 21 June 1624 regarding the rumor that Mara Buck, her sister, was to be stolen away. She was listed as John Burrowes wife in the muster of Jan. 1624/5.

Bridget married (2) William Davis and (3) John Broomfield. These marriages are established in the land grant to John Broomfield dated 15 December 1656 for 1200 acres in James City County and described as land formerly granted to William Davis on 27 March 1643. Patent Book 4, page 55 and page 81.

Also, (2) From an order in Hening's Statutes, it appears that John Brom-

field married Bridget, a daughter or granddaughter of Rev. Richard

Buck, the minister who opened with prayer the first Legislative Assem-

bly in 1619. A land grant about 1658 describes her as widow of WilliamDavis.

I HENRY TIMBERLAKE of Chilling in the parish of Tichfield, co. Southampton, gent, being sickley in body and lame in my limmes, this 10th day of July, 1625, make this my last will and testament. To Thomas Timberlake my eldest son and his heirs all such lands and tenements and shares or parts of land as I am now seised of in the Somer Islands or Virginia in the parts beyond the seas, and one parcel of land called Hobbs or Madam Land, lying in Barking, co. If a relationship exists between Christopher Burroughs and John Burrows(early settler) who married Bridget Buck, I believe it is father and son.

It is likely that John Burrows Burruss had married prior to his marriage to Bridget Buck at the age of 44. John Burrowes and Bridget did not have children in the muster of 1623/24. If they had children, they would have had to have been born between 1625 and 1628 when John Burrowes was fatally stabbed. Christopher would have been too young to have purchased property in Elizabeth City in 1636, so I believe he is the child of a prior marriage in England.

Court - March 30 1639/40 - Lower Norfolk County, Book A. 1637-1646 by Alice Granbery Walter - Extract The wife of John Sibsey claimed she gave her servant Mary Soames, 3 gold ring. She asked for their return but Mary Soames denyed she had the rings. Mary looked around the house, found one of the 3 rings, and has now gone to live in another place. Christopher Burrowes brought Mrs. Sibsey one of rings he said he received from Mary Soames.

Court September 28, 1640 page 51, Lower Norfolk County, Book a. 1637-1646 Walter. Christopher Burrough of Linhaven, planter for divers good causes and conderings me therunto moving have given, granted sould, confirmed and sett over unto my well beloved brother William Burrough of the same place, planter and to his heires and assignes all that whole plantation whereon I the said Xpofer do now live...Signed 6th day of January in the year of our Lord 1639/40.

31 January 1643 - Deed William Burrough purchased 200 acres from Robert Hayes of Little Creek in the par of Lynhaven in the County of Nowere Norfolk.

23 January 1641/42, William Burrough gave power to transact business for his estate to Chritopher Burrough.

12 April 1641 Lower Norfolk County, Book a. 1637-1646 Walter page 58. Christofer Burrough and Mary Somes are presenting by the church wardens of Linhaven Parish for "commttinge of fornication". "Christofer and Mary shall accordinge to the statute of England do penance in their parish Church the next sabbath the minister preacheth at the said Church standinge in the middle ally of the said Church upon a stool in a white sheet, and a white wand in their hands all the time of divine service and shall say after the minister such words as he shall deliver unto them before the congregacon there present and also pay the charges of the court.

19 April 1641 Lower Norfolk County, Book a. 1637-1646 Walter page 87. It appeareth by oath that Mary Somes was forced by Capt John Sibsey to serve 7 weeks longer in her term of service mentioned in her indenture and hath not given any satisfaction to the said Mary for the same. 1652 February - Christopher Burroughs gives one new Bible and a parcel of books to the libraries of Lower Norfolk, value 250# of tobacco.

(from Abstracts of Virginia Land Patents, prepared by W. G. Stanard) The name of this family is spelt in the Lower Norfolk records Burroughs, Bourroughs, Borrowes, and Burough. Christopher Burroughs, the patentee, was a member of the House of Burgesses for Lower Norfolk, 1645 1646 1652 and a Justice in 1652. In a deposition made in 1642 he states that he was thirty years old. In 1643 he cites a power of attorney, dated 1641, from his borther, William to himself. He died between 1652 and 1671, as in the latter year there is a grant to Benoni Burroughs, son of Christopher Burroughs, deceased. Christopher had at least two sons, William and Benoni. The latter was a justice of Lower Norfolk from 1684 and of Princess Anne in 1700. There is a deed in November 1677 from Benony Burrough, of Lower Norfolk and his wife Mary to his brother, William Burrough. Christopher Burroughs was a vestryman of Lynnhaven Parish 1728-36. Doubtless the records of Princess Anne county contain additional information in regard to the family. There was probably some relationship with Rev. Richard Buck, the early minister. The latter had a son named Benoni, and in an order of Assembly; March 1654-5, it is stated the Mrs. Bridget Bromifeld, late widow of John Burrowes had been one of the guardians of the children of Rev. Richard Buck.

Christopher Burrows, Burroughs, Burruss, patented land in 1635 in what is now Princess Anne county, and was a burgess for Lower Norfolk county 1645, 1646, 1652, and was a justice in 1652. He was born in 1612 and died before 1671, leaving two sons William and Benoni. He was probably a son of John Burrows, of "Burrows' Hill" in Surry county.

William Burroughs, One of the Owners, of the ship "Swallow of New England". She entered Inwards in Lower Districk of Potomack 25 March to 25 June 1702. She was built in 1696 and weighted 25 tons.

William Burroughs, Master of the Ship "Swallow of Boston" a sloop. She is listed as entering the Rappahanock District from 29th September to 25 Dec 1701. The Swallow of Boston was built in 1696 in New England, and weighted 25 tons. John Foster, Nath'll Kinkeman, Jos. Souter and William Burroughs were listed as the owners.

William Burrows and company, Owner. William Burrows, Master of the ship "Swallow of Boston" entering Accomack Districk 12 July 1701 through March 20 1702. She was built in 1696 and weighed 25 tons.

By 1703 William Burrows was no longer the master but one of the owners.

He married MARY M.. She was born Abt. 1645 in Princess Anne County, Virginia.

Will of Robert Hodge, Lower Norfolk County, Book 4, page 79-80-81 mentions his friend Bennoni Burroughs who lives in the southside of ye Chancell in Linhaven Church...and continues on to give Bennoni Burroughs and his heirs "halfe of ye Tract of Land, paten'd in ye name of anthony Lawson & my Selfe, wch Land is called by ye name of Chester ....fforrest...my great Kearsey Coat lined with red serge and ten yards of Docoles linnen out of my great Chest in ye Store....Ben Burrough was a witness to the Will.

Davis his fence and from thence bounded by several lines drawne as followeth: first NW to ye land that was mr. Lamberts then SW to the corner of the land formerly Addam Thorowgoods and now Wm. Smiths thence by ye sd Smiths mked trees 252 to a poynt of land neer ye head of a Gutt where is a marked Quarter Pine thence running by ye sd Needhams Marsh. 944 acres hereof granted to ye sd Borace by pattent dated 30 Oct 1671 and the other 50 due for trans of one person.

The two sons did divide the land by a survey. Robert Burrough, one of the devisees died, and in his last will devised his part of the land to his brother, Benjamin Burroughs. Witness: John Edwards and Christopher Burroughs.

12. Benjamin Burrough also gave to his son Arthur the tract that was allotted to himself by the aforesaid division. Arthur died without children and the aforesaid two tracts were vested in Robert Burrough, grandson of the first devisor, Benoni Burrough.

13. The last mentioned Robert Burrough did by indenture dated 20 Oct 1735 sell to James Hunter all the land estimated as 300 acres.

Benoni Burrows son of Christopher Burrows, was burgess for Norfolk county in 1697. He was grandson of John Burrows, who married the widow of Rev. Richard Buck.
