History of the Practice

The practice can trace its roots back to the 1940s, when, on leaving the Polish army after the war, Dr Lew Shenfine joined a practice on Walker Terrace in Gateshead. He later set up practice on his own and was joined by his brother Michael and later by Michael's wife Claire. For this reason the practice is still sometimes referred to as ‘The Shenfine Practice’!

Dr Rizwi joined the practice in 1970, and in 1974 the practice took up the offer to move into what was then the new Gateshead Health Centre.

In 1977, Dr Michael Shenfine left the practice for a position with the Coal Board, and was replaced by Dr Siddiqui. Dr Shenfine returned to Gateshead two years later, when a single handed practice became available on Bewick Road. The two practices then merged into the split-site operation which existed until May 1997.

Dr Michael Shenfine retired in 1989.

Dr Eamonn Kennan joined the practice in 1992 on the retirement of Dr Claire Shenfine, with Dr Simon Daniels joining the practice in 1993.

Drs Linda Nutting and Catharine Allan joined us in January 1997, and Dr Katharine Greenough in November 1997.

Dr Stephen Potter joined us in 1998, on the retirement of Dr Siddiqui. And our most recent 'signing' was Dr Dominic Slowie.
